Dark Horizon
Black Rose Bandits; Sere Blake
<Black Rose Bandits>

-Sere Blake

It has been a little over two years since I left them. Heh, can still remember everything like it's branded into my mind. The government thought it seemed fit to make a group of highly enhanced super soldiers to keep order to what they see fit, which is a nice way of saying kill the innocent to scare the innocent. So a bunch of orphans including myself were picked up at a very young age to be trained without mercy until our spirit broke like our bones that way we were easy to manipulate. And for the record I am happy to say that I was the last to break, a little deviant. We were called the Blood Hound XIII, I was number thirteen, yep almost didn't make it. Yet the day I met her I knew my life would be different. It was a routine job for my instructor, who saw it fit to bring one of us out now and again to look at what the streets had become, anyway outside in the rubble and debris I met her. Maria, she was about the same age as me but lived in the destroyed street and yet she smiled and was kind even in the desperation of things, but most of all she was nice to me. She was indeed a rare rose in the weeds. Afterwards my instructor saw me with her and I had a severe punishment for communicating with an outsider. Later I asked for the rose tattoo on my right forearm because she told me she loved them and I wanted to hold what little of a new friend I had made. When we hit the age of fourteen they enhanced our genetic compound by giving us some kind of gene injection that boosted our physical and mental state.
Mine was called the Vampire Gene which caused my canines to grow slightly longer than normal, gave me night-vision, speed, strength, reflexes, enhanced healing, ect... but the main reason it was called the Vampire Gene was because I could smell fresh blood and I craved it. Not like hunger but wanting to smell more and it releases this sort of powerful aura that causes explosive effects, like burning leaves and stifling the air around me you know those kinda things. I'd sorta black out and lose control of myself in a rage for more blood, but no worries I managed to get that all under control now through hard work and such but who knows it may still linger. Lets see there was also the Ghost Gene, Witch Gene, Beast Gene, Psychic Gene, Demon Gene, Morph Gene, as well as a few others and then some injections that were never used. Anyway our job was to go from place to place and if a hint of an outbreak or plot against the government were to be heard we would kill everyone to keep 'order'. I've earned the nickname 'Fallen Angel' due to my silvery-blue eyes and smooth features, which under certain lighting, like a fire, would cause my left eye to flash red, like from an angel to devil. At least that is what the survivors had said.
But back to the main point on how things went. On my sixteenth birthday the Blood Hounds went to a nearby town to 'check' it out, of course me as well. That was when I saw her again, Maria, she grew into a beautiful young woman and still smiled and even called out to me, but I continued to follow the rest of my group and ignored her... why the hell didn't I say hello... That night we heard a rumor that a group in the town was going to rebel, so we solved the issue by burning it to the ground and killing anyone that stood in our way. In the heat of the moment I used my blackened blade to cut anyone down and then I heard a familiar voice. I turned and saw her, laying in blood that was gushing from a large cut to her side, from my very blade. I fell to my knees in horror at what I had done. That was the moment I realized the mistakes and I hated it. In her dieing breath she told me, "There was nothing to worry about and everything was alright."... she handed me a cross she took from her necklace. But nothing was alright, the government had lied to me and I had killed the only bright smile in this hell hole... THE ONE WHO ACCEPTED ME! I decided to put in my resignation by signing it in the Blood Hound XIII's blood. I killed all of them but the town was no more and I might have saved a few others, but they wouldn't care, I was about to kill them as well. Stumbling out of the town I fell to my knees, put the cross to my heart, and I hate to admit it but I started to cry. I had never shed a tear until then, through my teary eyes I looked at my arm where I received the tattoo of a rose and remembered a rumor about a group of bandits who believed they were helping the innocent. That was what I wanted to do, I might never be forgiven but I may be able to give a little back to the world I had put down before I leave it...
