Chapter 1: Part 2 of 2

Meanwhile, Erin was trying to get Rinaldi saddled. First, she caught his wings under the twin saddle girths. Then, much to her embarassment, she found she had put the girths on backwards.

Stupid! She thoughtI can't believe I'm so darn stupid! I bet Omri NEVER had this much trouble saddling in the morning...

After several more tries, Rinaldi became fed up. Since he couldn't mind-speak with his partner yet, he showed his annoyance by stamping his foot and using air magic to float his gear into place.

Blushing furiously at needing her Valkyrie's help, Erin buckled the girths, clipped on her breast collar, and buckled Rinaldi's bridle in place.

Hurrying, Erin grabbed her saddle bags, clipped them in place and ran into the arena. Rinaldi had never been made enough to use magic to tack himself up. What would she do it he denounced her because she couldn't do even the most basic things to take care of him?

A loving nuzzle answered these thoughts, as Rinaldi gently pushed her onto the mounting block. With a soft whicker, she stood near the block, waiting for her.

Phew,She thought,He isn't mad at me...

Missing her stirrup all together, she landed on her nose on Rinaldi's back.

Yet...

Placing her hands on either end of the saddle, she placed her foot firmly in the stirrup and mounted. Just after she got settled they were off at a trot, trotting the gate at the end of the indoor arena, and then taking off at the other end of the outdoor.

Taking off was always an uncomfortable experience for her, but today, it seemed just a bit easier, as though Rinaldi was steadying her with yet more magic.

Someday boy, you won't have to cover for my lack of abilities,She promised silently.

Chapter 1: Part 1 of 2

The sun had just begun to shine into his window when Omri awoke. Yawning, he rolled over and had just covered his head when his sister's alarm clock began it's infernal racket.

Omri was never someone to tolerate noise, but as he had gotten less sleep than normal, he was even less tolerant.

Throwing himself out of bed, tripping over several of his books, slipping on the slick floor as he went, he dove headlong out his door, slamming it behind him.

Storming down the hall, his footsteps echoing loudly, he rounded a corner and opened his sister's door.

Upon entering, he proceded to vent the last of his quickly receding fury on the offending alarm clock, slamming the "Off" button with so much force that the clock's display went blank.

His sister rolled over then, and after yawning and stretching, went straight back to bed.

Knowing that tossing her out of bed wasn't half as bad a punishment for her over-loud alarm clock as letting her sleep, Omri stumbled into his room to get dressed.

An hour later, Omri, in much better spirits went downstairs to breakfast.

"Good morning, Sir. What is your breakfast pleasure?"

It was always nice to be around Selma, his family's cook, but this morning it was a God-send.

"Good Morning, Selma! I would like some fruit and toast, please. Is Erin up yet?"

"No, sir. Shall I ask Chaim to go get her?"

Sighing, Omri agreed that yes, Chaim should get her. He would much rather have left her lieing there after this morning's rude awakening, but he knew better. He was the older brother, after all. He had responsibilities.

Stomping sounds announced that Chaim had roused Erin, and a slammed door anounced that she was in no better humor than Omri had been.

A few minutes later, she apeared at the kitchen table, looking hastily dressed, with her hair a tangled bird's nest.

Feeling sorry for his morning-hating sister, Omri said, "Would you like me to bring your stuff to the barn with me, Erin? I'm sure Rinaldi won't mind if I tack him up for you."

"No! I can do this myself! Just because you think I'm incapable of starting Academy, let alone staying there, doesn't mean I am!"

"Well, excuse me. Aren't we just proving our critics wrong. Such an early riser! All ready to go 10 minutes early!"

This comment caught Erin off guard, and she spilled the milk she was drinking from the carton down her shirt.

"For God's Sake, Omri! It's not enough you destroy my alarm clock and don't wake me! Now look what you've made me do! Why can't you, just for once, leave me alone?"

Pushing away from the table, Omri grabbed his saddle bags and left, not wanting to hear anymore of his sister's ranting's.

Once outside, Omri broke into a run. His favorite part of the morning was his ride to the Academy, a school for Be'Ceran youths that possessed magical gifts. When he reached the barn, he all but fell through the open door in an attempt to slow down, but was stopped by the door handle a mere two inches from the floor.

The tack for Omri's Valkyrie, Adiera, stood on it's folding stand outside her stall. Omri made a mental note to thank Chaim for noticing that he was running late, and putting his tack there.

Grabbing the handle to her door, Adiera let herself out and stood quietly as he put the saddle pad, then the saddle on her back.

Interesting morning?she enquired, using her teeth to straighten her saddle pad

"Yes, it was. My sister's alarm clock just about threw me out of bed, then she had the nerve to sass me when I offered to help her get Rinaldi ready..."

Patience, excubri. She is young yet. Remember when you were first bonded? She has yet to figure out her place in a world it seemed she would never join due to her late magical-development.

Clipping his breast collar in place, Omri was about to go into the indoor arena, when he noticed that Adiera's wings were in bad need of a wash.

"I'm sorry, pretty one. I've been busy you see..."

His voice trailed off as he realized that he had been having just as much trouble as his sister was at the academy. Newer, stricter teachers, more homework...When would he have time to see to Adiera as he used to?

Sighing, he mounted. He should have been easier on his sister, knowing how hard she was trying...

Adiera jumped the gate separating the indoor from the outdoor in good weather, and took off mid-jump. Yet another day at the academy was about to begin.
