[ Death Note ]
I've always been the type to be skeptical of pop-culture. From what I understand, Death Note is one of the buzzing mangas out there at the moment and is said to have a relatively large fan base slightly less on par to the recent titans of Naruto, FMA, Bleach etc. In any case, curiosity got the best of me and I flung myself at it.

I read the first 15 chapters of Death Note when it was originally being released as scanlations over the net and liked it quite a bit. Somehow, I lost my downloading source and was unmotivated to seek an alternative. Recently friends of mine all began to mention it again so hell, why not? Me being the great internet pirate I am (Arrrrr! Actually, a friend linked me <3) found the remaining chapters up until 93 and read them all in a span of approximately 2 days.

As far as I can tell, Death Note is definitely worth reading, especially if you're not into generic pop-animes with lame drama or depthless non-stop action. It is an exhilarating rollercoaster of suspense and brain candy to a pretty impressive degree (for a manga). It’s well written, thought-out and executed while raising the questions/issues that relate to the effects of power, the ability to distinguish between “right” and “wrong”, the possibility of creating a utopia and how the human mind ticks.

The art isn’t too shabby either. Drawn by the same mangaka as the creator of “Hikari No Go” (Which in my opinion when it comes to writing/plot, it’s the equivalent of Beyblade with a board game called “Go” although it probably has slightly more substance, it’s essentially the same thing.) the drawings have a good eye-candy feeling to them to boot.

-----> SPOILER FOR: Death Note, Samurai 7, Naruto, Trigun, Kill Bill, SEL
I was really into Death Note until the removal of L from the series. Sometimes I have to ask myself, why do my favorite characters tend to die? First Lain from SEL (Well, she doesn’t really die but you know what I mean), then Legato Bluesummers from Trigun, then Kyuzo from Samurai 7, then Haku and Kimimaro from Naruto, then Gogo/Oren-ishi from Kill Bill (Okay it’s not an anime, but yea) and now L from Death note D:

I’m beginning to find it hard to be interested L’s said-to-be successors at all; Mello especially, since he’s just an emotionally driven brat seeking to conquer his thirst of filling his pride. Although it’ll be somewhat interesting to see how Near and Raito (********, Light is such a dumb name) duke it out at the end since Near actually resembles L in various ways.

In conclusion, Death Note’s a great manga. Read it.
