My warped imagination
How do you screw this up a fight scene?
A fight scene in a show shouldn't be that hard to create. It's a fight seen. You want to see one person beat the crap out of another person or have some sort of exchange. Suprisingly many shows have found a way to mess that up. In a fight scene you probibly want to see action ,but in some shows during fights they focus almost entirely on a characters thoughts, focusing on their eyes and face or having the character reminisce taking up the majority or the rest of the episode.
I can understand if a character thinks back to build on the plot, but if they recount something that happened an episode or 2 before, it's pointless! And focusing on thoughts the majority of a fight as ruining the point of the scene. Another set of ways they mess up fights is focusing on one body part during a strike or adding swooshy backgrounds. Why would you focus on a shin or a foot during a kick?
You see the character swing his leg so that should hint off what will happen next and if it doesn't then you can just leave the element of suprise. That at least will keep people interested. Why focus on a fist during a punch? Not the fist making contact, not even the arm, the fist.
Thats not even necessary! Even if you have a stub for a lower arm a punch will still do damage. A fist is nothing but a balled up hand. There aren't any complex or important movements to focus on. It's a pointless hole in the action. Just like swooshy backgrounds!
Most fights in any situation, real or fake, take place in atleast the presence of a tree. whether it's a collapsed city or a forest, I think that the surrounding provide enough of a reference point to tell you that the characters are moving. In a situation were there isn't a reference point in the background , like a dragon ball z fight seen in the air on a cloudless day, The other character should be enough of a reference point.A blurred cascade of lines flying across the screen is a uselessly lazy add on to any seen, let alone a fight. I watch all these shows and I wonder how there have been movies based almost completely off fighting, and a show can mess up a 2 minute skirmish. If you need to drag out a fight, ADD MORE MOVES!!! How hard does that sound.
