Dragon

Out her window she sees her champion coming, her knight in shining armour, coming to rescue her from the perils of her mind. He comes to fight the inner dragon. The dragon that lets darkness prevail. She wonders if it’s too late. Too late for someone like her who’s confined by her own misery, who has tried to save herself but every time has failed. Sure the dragon seems to vanish sometimes, but it always comes back. For the dragon seems to be content with burning everything she cares for most. She hears him open the door. He calls her name. She wonders if this is a dream created from lack of sleep... And blood loss. She thinks the dragon has won. Its talons have been tearing at her being, her willpower, for too long.

He calls her name again this time she manages a small moan in response. He doesn’t hear her. She begins to remember when he lifted her so high and made her feel so strong she felt like she could defy the dragon. She could, for a while. Then of course the dragon came back. “The dragon always comes back”, she murmurs to herself.

She sees a shadow rising through the once empty doorframe. She whimpers, scared that her dragon has come to claim her. He runs to her. He begins to cry. He tells her he loves her and pleads for her to stay with him. She begins to get tired and starts to close her eyes. Bright colours swirl beneath her eyelids. Purples, pinks and blues. The colours begin to darken and she feels tears on her shoulder. Tears that don’t belong to her. She wonders if this is just a dream. If her life is a dream. In the distance she almost hears sirens, she almost feels rough hands grab her. She feels her hand in his.

She wakes up in a bed. A bed that is not hers. She’s scared but for once she is not alone. She sees him next to her. Her hand still in his. He looks up at her his blue eyes full of tears. He asks her why. She says she just couldn’t fight anymore. He looks away. He doesn’t understand. He thinks it’s his fault. She tells him she loves him. He asks her if she loves him why did she try to leave him. His voice is cold. He lets go of her hand. He walks out of the room and she begins to cry. The dragon has won.
