Love is Eternal
a start but no end
can take 100 kinds of pain
never had a contract or agreement
but can past space and time

this one unending love
I'm giving to you
this life, and the next
[I'll] give you as much as there are

in my closed eyes
no matter how many times
still see your face
in my heart-lake*

this love
lasts forever
together with you
through eternity

(Chorus)
with me there is you
real love never dies
through happiness and sadness
over life and death

with me there is you
1,000 or 10,000 centuries
never abandoning
love is eternal when the loved one
is you

both hands appear empty
but actually hugging you
actually you haven't left
residing in my heart-lake

every brush
is like being moved by the wind
making this lake
ripples forever with love

*Chorus*

with me there is you
real love never dies
through happiness and sadness
over life and death

with me there you
old sky and old earth is fine**
never abandoning
love is eternal when the loved one
is you

*The song compares the heart to a lake
**"it doesn't matter if the sky and the earth becomes old"

This is a famous classic love song in Cantonese, one of the few Cantonese songs I still remember. I heard it a lot when I was small, before I even had an idea of what love is. I forgot all about the song until I heard it on TV one night, when the Hong Kong stars are all doing a special show to fund raise for the earthquake that devastated mainland China. By then I had already experianced great love as well as great heartbreak, and it became something that can make me cry everytime I hear it; because I know what it feels like when you have someone you feel will be together with you forever, only to lose it all.

After all these times, I still think about "that time" I had with "him." All the words I saw and heard "him" say- very hard to forget. I may be in a new relationship right now, but I don't think anything will make me feel that away again.

I want to be loved eternally
but is there really "eternal love" for me?
when everything around me falls apart
would there still be someone
who can take me into his arms and say
"Everything's fine, I'm here"?

Is it just too much to ask for?
