The Hitchiker
Chap 4

Not long after we finally saw the gas station coming up; the only lights around the whole area were those inside the station itself. I felt sorry for the attendant who was working this lonely stretch of road. After about 10 minutes, we pulled up into the lot and I parked the car in front of one of the pumps. I turned off the ignition and opened the door to my car. The man opened his door and exited before me. As he closed his door and went to the rear of the car, I got out and popped the trunk. I slowly walked to the trunk to help him get his bags out. I was in a hurry to get the hell out of here. I walked with him into the gas station, dragging behind me one of his duffle bags. Once inside he turned to me and thanked me kindly shaking my hand but didn’t smile. He then turned and walk to the gas attendant to asked for a phone book. I decided now was my chance to escape, but damn was I thirsty. I went and got a tea and a candy bar and paid for it before heading back out to the darkness. Once to the car I noticed I hadn’t closed my door, but whatever no one was out here anyway. So I climbed into the front seat and closed my door, putting my merchandise into the passenger seat beside me and turned the ignition back on. I hurriedly pulled out of the gas station and back onto the dark isolated stretch of road, backtracking to the main road I had started on. I kept my thoughts busy thinking back to the hitchhiker and the small talk we had on the way to the station. Hm I thought to myself … I never even found out his name. After about 10 minutes of that I got bored and decided to pop a CD into the car radio. I fumbled into the glove compartment searching inside for my classical music, the one I use for my ballet students. Once found I popped it in, and the first song that came on was Clair De Lune by Debussy. I started humming to the music and finally got a glimpse of the rising moon, its colors were radiant. I was so transfixed that I didn’t notice the man come from the back seat with a knife in his hand until it was too late. He pressed the blade to my throat and in a gruff voice told me to pull the car over. All I could think about was pleading for my life. I didn’t know who this was or why he was doing this but I complied. “ Please sir, don’t.. don’t hurt me.” I felt the blade rubbing against my throat as I breathed. Once I was idling on the side of the road, the man threatened again that he would kill me, this time it was if I didn’t get out of the car. “Please, ok you can have the car... just let me live!” He gruffed and pushed me into the door frame. “ Get OUT” He said louder, his voice cracking. He opened his own door and I reached for the latch stumbling out of mine. Once out he walked around his door and placed the knife back at my throat and pushed me forward to walk into a nearby clearing. Once we reached the location he asked for my money and my jewelry. I told him through sobs, that everything was inside the car, that I had nothing with me, to let me live. He laughed, not a nervous or arrogant laugh but a maniacal one. He was crazy, I was afraid he wouldn’t let me go. I closed my eyes in time to feel the blade leave my neck but it didn’t leave my skin for long. I felt the blade enter my body as he stabbed me 3 times in the stomach and chest before slicing my throat. He bent down over my body and cleaned the knife on my coat before smiling and walking off. I turned my eyes to the sky and looked at the rising of the last moon I will ever see.
