Character Profile(s)/Basic Plot Line
BASIC PLOT A deadly virus has been let loose on the citizens of Exie (pronounced Ex-ee), or so it seems. Half of the population has died, but the rest still cling to life, seemingly immune to it's deadly effects. Exie (meaning protector of men) is a small, underground city positioned directly underneath where the White House once stood before it was eradicated in a large nuclear explosion. It has a population of around 50,000. Only those who believed that there would be an explosion followed the leaders into the city, thus surviving. The other world, as they call it, is rumored to be nothing more than ruins. All harmful radiation has worn off, but it is still against the law to go there. What they don't know is that creatures of the night have taken over. It is the underground version of Atlantis, complete with advanced technology and moral values. Everyone who lives in the city is a vegan, as no meat or animals/livestock could be carried under in their haste to avoid being eliminated by the explosion. Everyone is in good health, for the most part. Food was carried down with them and seeds were planted immediately, so they get their nutrients from fruit and vegetables. A pipe system stems almost five hundred feet away in order to tap into fresh water sources. Water energy is used to power most everything. Poorer houses generally don't have electricity. Everyone works for the government and everyone in the government has some form of body modification. (Examples: Eye color change, Specialized tattoos, etc.) Every piece of food is rationed, but you can grow your own at home if you save your seeds that you receive from the rations you normal get. Aaralyn does this in a small button jar. Aaralyn has her own garden behind her house which has always thrived no matter the circumstances. Ever since she was born in the underground, she has been sickly. She has never felt well and always felt like a part of her is missing. In order to save the underground, someone must go to the other world and retrieve a vial that was planted in the ground long before the explosion. This vial allegedly contains the cure to this deadly "virus". Aaralyn, seeing her opportunity to get out of her self-proclaimed prison, volunteers. She is hidden away in another part of the city and tutored. Whilst in tutoring, she is operated on, fixed with many inhuman abilities that will help her in the other world. Armed with the cities secrets, she heads to the other world. She reaches the surface by climbing a rusted ladder hidden by a large pile of greenery behind the government housing development. Once she climbs up the ladder and to the top, the small door is closed behind her and she is trapped in the other world. Frantic, she tries to open the door again unsuccessfully. A voice comes up from the door saying "Come back with the vial and we will open the door for you. Then and only then, will you be let back inside." Surveying her surroundings, Aaralyn makes her way to this mysterious site. Her implanted abilities help her find her way. On her course, she meets werewolves, vampires, leeches (vampires gone wrong, they absorb your energy and can kill you if you aren't careful), Faeries (Yes, they have wings, but they can use illusion to hide them), and Nymphs (somewhat like mermaids on land, but with legs). She has many encounters with these creatures, some are bad and some are good. Faeries and Nymphs are always on Aaralyn's side and try to help her as much as possible. Once she has made her way to the site, she looks for the vial. After a long day of searching, she finds it (noting it's obvious coolness and shimmering qualities--It looks like bottled ice) and heads home. Staying in an old abandoned motel on the way, she gets assaulted by two leeches who crave her energy. She is trapped against a wall, about to be drained of energy until the leeches go to grab her wrists. They receive what looks to be a large electric shock and disintegrate. She makes it back in one piece, only to find that the "cure" is nothing more than the condensed form of the "virus". Aaralyn starts to get very agitated and angry. She starts to curl and uncurl her fingers and grit her teeth, getting angrier and angrier. Just before the government is to release the "cure" to the public, time freezes. Aaralyn is shocked to see that she can still move and comes to the conclusion that she somehow caused it. The first novel ends with her destroying the vial and discovering that the "virus" is nothing more than a slow-acting poison being distributed through the government's rations. They were running out of the poison and needed more of it in order to genetically reproduce it. They were attempting to kill off the elderly and the sick, but their plan was unsuccessful because some people had become immune to the poison. Evolution had taken it's toll. Those who were exposed to the brief period of radiation caused by the nuclear attack had somehow gained extreme immune systems. They had passed this down to their children, some of whom also obtained the immunity to certain poisons.
