Only Human: a short story
Only Human: a short story
The rain slipped all color to the sky....

She stared at the grass before her. There she stood, thinking her own thoughts, wondering how it felt to be with company. Her eyes, wide and distant, saw nothing but her own mind. It was fine, that she saw nothing, because reality was never really the question, just the piece to invoke them. It was fine, that she knew the answers to these puzzles, but she had never found time to pick up the puzzle that really mattered, the one of her. Who was she? Why was she? Would anyone care...again?

"You are the maiden cast with grey eyes, fair skin, and a dire need of judgment. You are the one who stood alone through the gates of heaven and hell. You are the one who no longer wishes to be alone, no longer wishes her mind numb, no longer wishes her side empty, just like it has been for all these 12 years. You are just as i"

She stood frozen, her back to him, the sacred silence of thought broken by the true words he spoke.

"You were no angel by god and no demon by Devil. You were set aside by both, neither having use of your already deemed worthless life. You were lead by the last ones you thought you could trust; you let them guide you ahead to ultimately be stabbed in the back just as your own family did before."

She had lead for feet. The hot tears of bitter anger seared from her eyes, leaving small trails along her cheeks. Her frozen heart was sinking to her lead feet.

In your disbelief from all of the torture and torment, you separated yourself from everyone, even the people who loved you and cared about you. You made a self imposed imprisonment not even you could get out of. You locked yourself away for if no one could see you, no one could abuse you, want you. You left behind your earthly disorder, but in your blind escape also left behind serenity. You must see this now.... it has been 12 years now..."

She knew what she had lost a long time ago, a time when the time was too late, the same time when time lost its meaning. Had she really been away for 12 years?

Disowned by your trusted, malevolence from your loved, infidelity by your own god. Hurled into despair, drawn into desperation, you did all you could think..."

She fell to the ground as he tried to catch her, and though successful, he was unable to finish his statement. Even in his arms, the arms she knew were familiar, they felt strange, she felt cold and alone, dejected and abandoned, just like the day she sealed herself here. "Condemned to long, to desire, for what can no longer be attained. "
She raised her head to match his glaze. And there they sat, engrossed in each others soul, one as pale as rainclouds, one as lonely as a raindrop, melancholy both they stared.
"You could never know. I've been called much, but not a liar. They call me reckless, vulgar, vile, worthless, they call me all they portray themselves. Forever it seems I have lived with those last words of irony, that my sorrow shall evermore be nothing. So i have been...." she paused as if in pain, still in a halfhearted cry, "i am miserable in the wretched,"

"Pain that can't be felt. Be still, be silent."
He knew what she had been through. Every step of the way he had tried to be there, even when everyone else had their backs turned or daggers poised.

She stopped crying, too exhausted to continue. one last time, she looked up to see the bright smile on his face, the one that kept her sane those years before her imprisonment. Her eyes, the color of rainclouds, his, the color of raindrops, met one last time as the grayness of her self-inflicted prison began to melt away into colors she had forgotten.

"Nothing can fix a broken heart but the love of another, so come, my bleeding maiden, lest you forget what it means to be human."

The ones who walk alone are condemned to perish if no one is there to tell them why.........
