Keeper of my Dreams
Ugh, Another Hunting Story (at least it's about me, finally)
2007 Gun Deer Season Erin ****

Saturday November 17, 2007

The sun hadn’t risen yet when I woke up that morning. Barely crawling out of bed, I sluggishly put on my multiple layers of clothing. As I walked around the house, I noticed that my family was giggling at my new marshmallow like figure. After that, I searched my house for anything that would occupy the long, tiresome hours that I would spend in the tree stand. Just like last year, I brought along my MP3 player and a book. At that moment I despised warmth, but later while I sat in the stand, I wished that the warmth had remained.

I made it out to my stand at about 6:15 am, an average starting time. As I sat in the stand I could hear constant gun fire throughout the morning. I anxiously held my gun waiting for the perfect opportunity. After about twenty minutes I started to feel the comforting warmth start to fade into cold misery. Luckily I remembered to take out my hand-warmers, although they started to work after approximately thirty minutes. Soon the worst possible thing happened: it started to snow. My hands and cheeks were beginning to num a bit, but I kept imagining the prize that was waiting for me in the thicket. Until noon I had seen only blue jays bickering among themselves about the seeds on the ground.

After a few hours I returned to the truck where my fellow hunters were waiting for me. By this point our group had shot three doe’s and a four-point buck. We ate our lunches and returned to the stands. Reluctantly I managed to hunt in a different stand this time. This stand may be wobbly, but at least it wasn’t facing the wind unlike my previous one. My luck at this stand wasn’t much greater. All that I saw were woodpeckers, blue jays, and three deer. Sadly the deer were hiding among the trees, out of my shooting range.
The funniest moment on Saturday happened when I moved to my second stand in the afternoon. I was quietly reading my book when I heard something starting to climb my tree. I laid my book down and I cautiously searched around my stand. I raised my head and there was a small red squirrel roughly three feet away. I waved my hands, attempting to scare him, but he just stood there staring at me. It seemed as if he was curious about what I was because the next day the same squirrel climbed the same tree. At first I thought that it was kind of cute, but after awhile it seemed like he wanted to attack me.

Unenthusiastically climbing out of bed, I suited up for another long day of hunting. My dad drove my sister and me to my grandma and grandpa’s house. There, we reunited with our hunting clan and proceeded out to the woods. I climbed into the same stand as I did yesterday and patiently waited for about three hours. Then my dad and my sister decided to start a drive since none of the hunters had seen any major deer movement. We unsuccessfully returned to grandma’s house for breakfast. Soon after, we continued to make two more drives which were both unsuccessful.

At about three in the afternoon we decided to pack up and head home. I let out a sigh of relief. The day was over, or so I thought. Halfway home my dad proposed that my sister and I make another drive behind our house. I was fed up with driving, but I still continued. We climbed to the top of our hill and entered the small lot of woods. We started to bellow and yell, trying to scare the deer out of the forest into the open field where our dad was waiting. Suddenly I heard seven shots within two minutes. I radioed my dad when we reached the end of the drive. He told us that he had shot at a doe and we should head over by him. When we arrived, we saw him kneeling next to the dead animal. Overall, about six deer had run into the barren field. We went to Chili Corners and had it registered with my tag instead of his. This way I could have an Earn a Buck for next year. One of the greatest things about Gun Deer Season is seeing, talking, and sharing hunting stories with family.

Just a story I wrote for my English II class. It was copied and handed out to all of my teacher’s English classes ^^, because it was apparently that good. I don’t know how I managed to get on Bittrich’s good side XD
