Okay, so today was interesting. I went to watch this huge kendo tournament. I forgot to mention early that I accidentally let it slip that I used to practice kendo at home. Little did I know that one of Japan’s most famous samurai (Musashi) was born in my little town. So now EVERYONE wants me to join the kendo club. If they only know that I trained for only six months before having to quit due to graduating.
Anyway, so I’m at this tournament, and the head guy in the office keeps teasing me. Of course I can’t understand a word he’s saying. (There is an office there where my supervisor works. It’s connected to the school board somehow….) He’s pretty good natured, I just can’t understand him. So yeah, at one point I grabbed my camera and went to get a shot of the action. First my supervisor tells me to sit in the row behind the judges so I can get some good shots. That was fine. However…
…The big boss who was teasing me came along and tapped by shoulder and instructed me to follow him. Now keep in mind that this guy is about the equivalent of an eight degree black belt and runs the place. You just can’t say no to this guy without looking like an a**. And technically, he’s my boss… somehow. So yeah, I sit where he tells me to… RIGHT ON THE JUDGES PANEL. He even puts the purple JUDGES-ONLY ribbon on me. So now, I’m sitting there in my casual clothes next to SUPER FORMAL judges, and slowly I start to feel hundreds of pairs of eyes on me. Greeaattt….
I could just see it. “Look at the gaijin (foreigner)! Is she a judge?! What’s she doing there?” Yadda yadda. I was quite uncomfortable, but couldn’t find a good opportunity to slip away until after a very long match. ARGH!
Oh yeah, and this ridiculous goofy mascot came up and hugged me. The only way a Japanese person won’t freak out with me around is if they are in a giant yellow anime costume.
The Japanese mascots love you, Chi! eek That's awesome!
I'd be so intimidated by that... I mean, it's really awesome that he decided you were worthy of being a judge for some mysterious reason, but seriously, that would scare the crap outta me. O.o

Yeah, you could tell that guy knew he was top dog. Just the way he carried himself.... There is such a division between bosses and subordinates there that he acted like he owned the world. But whatever, he was cool xD
