I remember going to Okayama City and wandering around alone one night. I was staying at a nearby hotel and felt like getting a bite to eat. (Ironically, I went to McDonalds....) Anyway, on my way back to the hotel I heard music. This guy was standing on the sidewalk singing and playing guitar. He was really good. So good, in fact, that I sat near him to listen. He didn't see me since he was so into his music. Most people just walked by as if they didn't notice. It was only the young people, such as myself and the few others who didn't feel ashamed to be out so late, who took notice. When he had finished playing, I walked up and told him that I thought it was beautiful. I must not have had an accent when I said it, because he turned to thank me and did a double take. For some reason it seemed to mean more to him that someone who wasn't Japanese took notice of his music. I thought about dropping some money into the guitar case, but in Japan, I'm pretty sure they aren't doing it for money. Might think I was crazy.
