D.Gray Theories
I never write here. So why am I deciding to do so now?
...
Because I'm bored. xD And my one little post so long ago seems lonely by itself.

So what shall I talk about in this entry? The title says it all: my own random theories on D.Gray (since it's my recent obsession), where I don't feel like putting anywhere else. All these theories of mine spawned from browsing around numerous D.Gray LiveJournal communities, so...yeah. Some of my ideas aren't really original. xD

Here we go!

Kanda's "Person"

Okay, so even though Hoshino doesn't provide much insight into Kanda's past, we do know that he refuses to die before he finds "that person." Because of his curse (he heals very quickly, though every time he heals, his lifespan decreases), he can get injured terribly, but will not die. That was illustrated in the Matel arc.

So the question is, who cursed him? And is this person the person he's supposed to find?

I've heard ideas that the person he's supposed to find is a woman/girl (apparently based on the way Kanda refers to "that person." I can't understand Japanese, so I'm not sure for myself.). Miyazaki, an assistant or friend of Hoshino's, published a thing called "The Secrets of D.Gray-Man" where he guesses that the person is Kanda's lover.

I personally find this idea impossible and ridiculous because:

1. Kanda's a jerk. 'Nuff said.
2. He has an extreme intimacy complex. He can't even call people by their names (as shown when he calls Allen "moyashi" wink because he hates forming connections/relationships with anyone. He probably sees relationships as liabilities.
3. Kanda with feelings? For a girl? A girl? Pffft. He's willing to kill anyone, leave anyone to die without a second glance. He said so to Allen on their first mission. He's the most emotionless person...ever.

So why do I like him? I just do. xD He's cool.

As such, I believe that this mysterious "person" is Kanda's previous master (perhaps the person who taught him swordfighting), or a person that he respects enough to not refer to him/her rudely. This person could be either a man or woman, though I'm leaning more towards a man. If we go with the whole master idea, it could be that the master cursed Kanda so that he would train and become so strong that he wouldn't get hurt, thus he wouldn't have to heal and decrease his lifespan. And Kanda would have to find his master, perhaps to defeat him in a battle or to show how much he has learned/accomplished. This was what somebody on LJ said, and I thought it was a really good theory. It makes sense too, concerning Kanda's personality (If he has one, haha. But that's another discussion.).

The Heart of Innocence

Ahh, the ever-so-elusive, mysterious, confoundingly complicated Heart. The Earl's after it. The Black Order's after it. So who has it? Or rather, where is it if a person doesn't have it at all?

The obvious choice would be Allen. I mean, he's the main character after all, right? And he's strong, destined to be the "Destroyer of Time," take down the Earl, etc. The next part may be spoiler-ific, so I'll put it in white:
But Tyki ripped off Allen's arm, thus destroying his Innocence. If Allen's Innocence was the Heart, all the other Innocences in the world would have turned to dust...which didn't happen. Allen's Innocence did survive, and it did save his life, and eventually his Innocence "evolves" and gets reattached, but still doesn't prove that his Innocence is the Heart.

As a result, I actually have a few theories concerning this subject. First, I think it's probable that Lenalee has the Heart. Hoshino's a pretty great storywriter, so I doubt that s/he (since I'm still not sure whether Hoshino's male or female) would go for the obvious and make Allen have the Heart. S/he's probably planning some great twist that'll leave us going, "OMG WHAT?!" But I stick to my idea that Lenalee probably has the Heart because she's probably the next most important main character. As much as I love Kanda and Lavi, they're not major enough to be the possessors of the Heart. Lenalee has also been at the Black Order since a very young age, because the scientists found that she was compatible and had great potential. Her Innocence actually underwent a transformation too, later on, which was apparently unheard of.

Also, this might be a bit of a random shot in the dark, but I've been analyzing the third ending sequence too. In many of the scenes, Lenalee is shown seperate from the other Exorcists, with either her back turned towards them, or she's standing up while everyone else is laying down. I interpret that to mean that she's supposed to stand out from the rest, either from her abilities, her having the Heart, or...maybe simply because she's one of the only females. Lenalee also seems to have prophetic dreams, and even a telepathic connection with her brother, which may say something.

And if not Lenalee, I also think that the Heart may be seperated into two or more pieces, and when the two or more possessors of the Heart (perhaps Allen and Lenalee?) come together during a critical moment, the true powers of the Heart will awaken. Either that, or a future character may possess it. Or maybe it's still hidden somewhere in the recesses of the world. There are many possibilities, really.

Lavi - ラビ

Okay, so there's not really a big controversy about Lavi (or so far, I think). So I just want to talk about him, since he's probably one of the hardest characters to understand in the whole series. =D I want to focus especially about his role as the future Bookman. A Bookman technically isn't supposed to have "emotion" or bias, nor is he supposed to develop any particular feelings or attachments for anybody. Considering Lavi's personality, I find it kinda hard to believe that Lavi will really become the next Bookman, even though he's destined to succeed the current one. When I see how he teases Allen and Kanda, takes care of Lenalee, and acts like the glue that holds them all together, it pains me that he'll literally have to forget their current relationship. And because I'm a bit of a yaoi fangirl, I find that his relationship with Allen and Kanda may be a bit more than just platonic friendship. xD -shot- But seriously, though. They've been through so much together.

So I really wonder whether Lavi's capable of such a thing, or whether he's willing to give them up. The Bookman now always has to remind Lavi not to become too hot-headed, or not to get involved, or not to show emotion, etc. "A Bookman must always observe from the sidelines, without choosing a side."

And though Lavi appears at first to be a happy-go-lucky character, he's really so much more than that. He can get extremely serious at times, and he's actually really smart too, being the Bookman-in-training. He's got an amazing memory, able to memorize just about anything. And deep beneath his happy exterior, I think he really does worry about a lot, including his future and his duties as a future Bookman, along with Allen's fate. If anything, his happy exterior probably covers up a lot of past sadness, though not much has been revealed about him either. Darn you, Hoshino, for leaving us in the dark all the time!

---
Anyway, though I could keep going, I still have some homework to do. And I'm getting tired. I don't want this to become extremely, unnecessarily long, though it probably already is. xD;

P.S. - I also thought it was interesting how today is White Day. ^^

'Til the next time, I bid you adieu~

Sophia, I think you've missed one of the most OBVIOUS reasons as to why Kanda would not have a lover---

If he were to have a lover just pop up out of the blue for such a major character(one with many fans, no less)... the author would get his a** flamed. And another thing, it's a JUMP series---there is no way there can be such a dark romance-based past for a major character like Kanda---it's just not how JUMP series work. Now, if the label for D.Gray-Man was "Hana to Yume(Equivalent to US's Shojo Beat)"... then it would be possible. 8D But since it's not, it's not.

    xD

Don't take what I said seriously, though. That was just crack-based logic... though it IS reliable, in it's own way.

Ahaha, no, I understand your logic. I would hate it if Kanda actually had a lover. xD

But see, even though it IS a JUMP series, I actually see room for romance in D.Gray (though unlikely). There are sections in the manga where Hoshino answers questions from fans, and one of the questions was "What is love?" xD

Hoshino's reply: "...I hope to show that in this manga."

So there. 8D But I think by this reply, Hoshino wasn't referring to Allen, or the other main characters, but more through the various characters that show up along the way (the characters that appear once and never come up again). As you know, anybody that gets involved with Akuma or the Earl usually has a really difficult past. It reminds me a lot of FMA in this sense.

And I guess the whole love aspect comes up in the whole, "You love someone so much that when they die, you'll do whatever it takes to bring them back to life again," which is what the Earl takes advantage of. So there's a struggle that arises: once you bring them back to life as an Akuma, you become torn because you have just imprisoned your loved one's soul. And then you usually get killed by the person you brought back to life. >__>

So the series questions the validity of love, as well as what "true love" is, and how far you're willing to go for your loved ones. With Allen, for instance, the loss of his foster father Mana really affected him (since Allen was partly responsible for his death). There's this whole guilt-tied-in-with-love aspect. It's actually a rather interesting concept, to me at least.

...Anyway, yeah. Senseless rambling. xD I take anime too seriously sometimes... "||

Personally, I think Kanda's "Person" shouldn't be his master. It should be something totally crazy out-of-the-blue that we will all be screaming "WTFFFF!!!" for days on end. Before you mentioned it, I thought he's OBVIOUSLY looking for the Heart because who else would he be looking for (and then you run into some obvious irony, because if you're looking at what's obvious then Allen is obviously the Heart and he hates him). But now...imagine the possibilites! It could be a dog, or all we know. He could be looking for his soul, his mother, his lover, a lover, his DEAD lover, the scabbard for Mugen, heck, maybe he's trying to find himself.

Lavi's awesome. I'm sure all will be revealed in time. Patience, my child. (Hehe...MWAHAHAHA!..he...hic.)

My bet is on Lenalee and Allen for the Heart, Lenalee for all your reasons, and Allen because he's a mutant. (Were there any other's actually BORN with their innocence?) And cause they're in love...ooo! Maybe they have child, and THAT'S the heart! Okay, no, that wouldn't happen. But still! (I still think Allen's too young to have a love life, but that's just me, the poor, traditional, non-Yaoiist.)

Or maybe they're are several potential Hearts, and they have to pass some sort of spiritual test? (If Allen and Lenalee are contenders, it'll be sad either way. And Lenalee will lose, 'cause she's a girl and isn't Allen.)

Am I the only one who thinks there should be a Heart of Dark Matter, too? And an epic battle? (Ooo - maybe they're gonna have judgement day battle! And Christ on a horse!) I know that would be somewhat random, but since dark matter seems to be created whenever an Akuma is made (correct me if I'm wrong), the Heart of Darkness (it's got a nice ring to it) could be the most evilly corrupted soul in the world (Which I think is Kanda. Don't hit me! I'm just sayin'!), and it could have only just recently come into being.

Whoever the Heart of Darkness is, I'm their fangirl. (Bunnyears!!!)

I hope Kanda gets nice...he's too pretty to be evil....

-dies laughing at your comments- Have I ever told you how great you were? <3

Before I respond, I must say, I find it amazing that you're actually indulging in discussion over an anime. With me. Over D.Gray too. And it's so looong! xD I'm proud of you.

Anyway, though I think Kanda's "Person" SHOULD be his master, I like the idea of something crazy and out-of-the-blue as you said. You never know with Hoshino. But I don't understand exactly why he'd be looking for the Heart (though it's an interesting theory), since he doesn't seem like the power-hungry type. He may search for the Heart for the Order, perhaps, but not for himself. And with the whole Kanda-Hates-Allen thing...being a Yaoiist (Interesting term. Coined it yourself, did you?), I believe that hate springs up into love. ;D -shot for being a KandaxAllen fan-

...The idea of Kanda searching for a dog/his soul/his mother/his dead lover/Mugen's scabbard cracked me up. xD Ahaha.

Lavi IS awesome. And with the recent release of the D.Gray fanbook called "Gray Ark" (I want it. >__< wink , I finally know a bit more about him! I'll probably make another entry discussing the new info. presented to us in the fanbook, where you can come challenge my ideas.

    Haha, definitely. I agree, Allen's too young to have a love life, and he's too innocent. He blushes at the mere mention of anything relating to love (like when Lavi teases him about having feelings for Lenalee). Even though I love KandaxAllen, it wouldn't be realistic. ^^;

A Heart of Dark Matter? Again, it's an interesting theory. Dark Matter is the substance that an Akuma is made from, not that an Akuma creates Dark Matter. But see, the purpose of the Heart of Innocence is that it controls all Innocence...meaning that the possessor can either combine all Innocence into one massive power, or destroy all Innocence. If there was a "Heart of Darkness," I don't see what use it would have except to...plunge the world into eternal darkness and misery? Well, okay, maybe it does have a use. But the Earl's going after the Heart of Innocence because he wants to destroy all Innocence so that he'll be invincible, which brings about the same result as if he used this hypothetical Heart of Darkness. I think. Haha, I'm not making sense.

And in response to Kanda being the most evilly corrupted soul in the world, well, I should hit you for saying that. But I won't. Instead, I'll offer my explaination as to why he's not. xD Firstly, though he IS a jerk and has zero emotional capacity, he's not evil. He wouldn't be fighting the Earl if he was truly evil. Secondly, I don't think he has bad intentions. His current personality, I think, results from a painful past, and he acts like he does because he doesn't want himself or others to get hurt again. Yeah, it's cheesy, but it seems reasonable.

Truthfully, I think it might be the fact that Kanda's so pretty that he has so many fans. 'Cause if he was dead ugly, he'd be hated and shunned to the ends of the Earth. xD

Kanda: WHAT. DID. YOU. SAY. -draws Mugen-
    Me: A-Ahaha, Nothing!

Riiiight. Knew you'd stick up for that son-of-a-cabbage.

Maybe...maybe nobody truly understands innocence, or dark matter. Maybe even though they've both been using it for centuries, neither the Black Order nor the Earl really know what they're doing. Sooo....I can say anything I want! 4laugh And I like epic battles! Though I suppose they have an epic battle every volume, so I can't be to picky.

    Ahaha, I can't help it. I fangirl over the guy. xD;

You're entitled to your thoughts. You could be right, for all we know.
