At first he didn't see her; he was overwhelmed with the urge to call her and demand where she was--coming here was her idea anyway. This was just like her, too.
He let his eyes wander over the cemetery, searching for her. He ignored the golden glow of the dewy grass in the dawn, the sigh and whisper of the trees as the morning woke them from their sleep. He had forgotten her woebegone voice when she asked him to meet her here. He had forgotten this wasn't just a place for past deaths.
He noticed a small clearing with a large oak with a swing in the middle, a figure perched on its aging wooden seat. "Hey, girl!" He exclaimed, hurrying over as he recognized the curve of her back, the long black hair.
She glanced behind her, somber. "Hey, baby." She whispered. She sniffed, rising from the swing, and walked over to him. "You found me."
His mood had lifted greatly upon seeing her, so in his happy buoyancy, he bypassed the pink rimming her bright blue eyes, the tear streaks down her cheeks, the soft whisper. Her sadness. "Yeah, you sure made it difficult to do that. Geez, girl, you didn't have to make me waste the gas to get here if you wanted to play hide and seek." He grinned, oblivious to the two new tears and the quiet sniff.
"I know." She mumbled, attempting to smile for his sake.
Putting his arm around her waist, he led her out of the entrance to the clearing, launching into the details of his recent family trip to New York City. They meandered around the cemetery like this for a while: him babbling, with her lost in her own thoughts, waiting for him to notice.
