A humorous look at life for a loser in love.
It's very funny. It's slightly pathetic. It's comforting in a hey-nobody's-human kind of way. - Channel 4 Film
It's a display of gross bad faith both as documentarist and lover, and its subject probably deserves never to get laid again. - Daily Telegraph
Sexual Failures is edited well, the score is great and while certain scenes feel a bit staged, Waitt is immediately likable and a ball to watch on the big screen. - Cinematical
Pace is snappy, soundtrack full of good alt-rock cuts. - Variety
Chris Waitt takes us on a journey with him through his nefarious past. He decides, foolishly it seems, to make a film about why he is such an emotional loser. He wants to know why he has been dumped by every girlfriend he has ever been with.
The result is a sometimes eye-wateringly funny feature length documentary as we follow his efforts to get in contact with all of his girlfriends to interview them. Sometimes he is genuinely surprised by the results, but you tend to find that he always gets more than he bargains for.
The film does go to extremes as he dabbles in investigating his impotence (the cause of the demise of at least one relationship) with a visit to his doctor and on the suggestion of several people, he takes (rather too much) viagra to see if it helps.
While the documentary rarely follows what you would imagine to be a linear path, it is no less entertaining for it, skirting of in all directions whilst in the process of achieving one simple goal, a genuine need to find an answer to a personal problem that he has no answer for at present.
At times, Waitt is both completely charming and by turns, an utter and complete idiot. We can all see the reasons why these women have left him behind and gone on to lead normal unhindered lives, unlike the man that calls them up out of the blue and invades their lives once more with a boom and a camera, demanding, rather forlornly, it must be said, answers to his questions as they look on in disbelief.
An excellent documentary, but you would have to question if Waitt is a one-trick pony, as surely there is little left for him to do in finding his worst aspects and displaying them for the rest of the world to point and laugh at.
There are truly elements of genius to be found here and whilst they go hand in hand with a foolish 'Jackass' mentality at times, the good just about outweighs the bad.
Entertaining for every single person that ever wanted to know why they got dumped.
Not recommended for kids, as Waitt does include some male nudity and masochism (his own, incidentally)
