if dogs could talk #9
I could hear, coming up the stairs, what sounded like heavy weights on wooden planks. Then, from around a corner came a large human woman. Her hair was a faded brown; her stomach was as large as expanded. She wore a yellow dress with white flowers. Sweat dawned upon her forehead. She dabbed at it with a hand cloth. “I hate those bloody stairs- SPARKY! You’re awake at last! Thank the heavens you’re alive! OH how Alyssa was so worried!” The human woman, who I assume was called Merriam, came towards me with outstretched arms. I tried to get up and get away, but it was too late, she embraced me in a massive hug, squeezing the life out of me. The human man prodded Merriam’s fleshy back with his boney finger. “Umm… Merriam dear, you suffocating the poor dog, he just woke up, he’s not better just yet. And-.” He was cut off by Merriam saying, “God Arthur! You’re right! The dear must be hungry after that nap. Are you hungry puppy? You’re a lucky doggie; you’re staying with the best cook in all of Canada. In fact we where just going to eat when you yelped, but we still have plenty of food. Arthur, pick up the poor dear, and bring him to the dining room.” She snapped at him “Merriam dear, that isn’t what I meant when I said… Oh never mind.” He leaned over to me and whispered, “Once she gets an idea in her head, she wont stop. It’s the Irish in her I think.” I gave a little, “Yipp” of laughter, as he lifted me and carried me out the room.

As I was being carried out, I caught a sight of my tail. It had grown quite a bit. My paws where quite a bit larger too. My golden fur was even fuller then usual. Had I grown while I was asleep? How long was I out for anyway? If only I could ask these humans how long I’ve been out. It feels like … a year. But that couldn’t be. Could it? I looked at the human named Arthur; he looked at me with a smile and gave me baby- talk. As degrading for the both of us as that was, I liked it. I looked around. There was a cozy little fireplace to the right on ground level with a reclining chair and an old rocking chair. At the foot of the stairs was the front door. Along the stair way was countless pictures of Merriam, Arthur, a little human, and two others who held the little one. We rounded a corner of the stairs to find a dining room where the little one sat in a “high chair”; I think they called the contraption. Merriam went into another room which I assume was a kitchen. Arthur sat me in one of the dining table chairs after making sure that Merriam couldn’t see.

Before me was a feast. Turkey lay in the center of the table, corn to it’s right, potatoes to it’s left. Peas rested in a small bowl behind the corn, and extra stuffing was behind the peas. The little one, who’s shirt read, “Alyssa” Had a little dinner tray made for kids that was filled with a little bit of turkey, macaroni and cheese, peas, and a little cup of an orange drink she seemed to like. My mouth drooled as I eyed the bountiful feast before me. I heard the little human, labeled, “Alyssa” giggle and say, “Ha, ha! Doggie make funny face!” I tilted my head in confusion. Was my face really that funny? I asked her, knowing she wouldn’t respond. “Yep! Your face funny.” I drew my head back in surprise. “You can understand me?!” I said, surprised and excited. She nodded and said, “Yep!” I barked with joy! Finally a human can understand a dog! It was common knowledge, even for me, who couldn’t remember anything that humans couldn’t understand us, but this little girl could?! I wagged my golden tail most affectionately and barked.

Merriam came into the room at this, and dropped the plate of ham she was carrying. It hit the ground with a clang and a thud. “Arthur!!! What is Sparky doing sitting at the table??!!” She hollered at the tall, slender man who was now cowering in his seat. “Well, Merriam dear…he’s…umm… well… a member of the family now so he should. It’s only fair. I nodded my head, agreeing with the now scared Arthur. Merriam gave a frighteningly scary look and said. “Ohhh…I cant stay mad at you Sparky. You can stay AS LONG as you behave your self, and remember to wipe your mouth; you’re drooling on the table cloth.” The entire table erupted in laughter, and I barked my agreement. Still one thing bugged me. WAS Sparky my name? And how did they know? I looked at the girl she pointed at my neck and said, “Sparky!” I looked down to see a collar around my neck. It had a crimson tag dangling down it wit neat black letters that read proudly, “SPARKY.” I loved it instantly. It was like a badge of honor. Sparky’s badge of honor. My badge of honor.

(Note form the auther#2: I would just like to point out, that resent research shows that children, specifically between 4-7 can tell who dogs feel and in some cases what they are thinking. Doctors don’t know how it works, but they know there is a link between their levels between intellect. [This has interested me for a while]
