A Touch of History
This will mostly contain history stuff.
Marriage wasn't a sacrament and wasn't performed in churches until the Reformation/counter-Reformation. Marriage was a civil affair for 1500+ years of christian history depending on your country of origin. I say that 1500 years is more "traditional" than a mere 500.

If I'm remembering right, the marriage sacrament was added to the Catholic Church in the early or mid Ninth century. I could easily be mistaken, but I seem to remember reading that somewhere. Before that, no church or religion had any such thing, that I know of. So if we're just talking about Christian tradition, that's still only about 1200 years, compared with the rest of human history (not to mention pre-history).

I'm still of the opinion that it should be shifted to a completely, absolutely civil institution. If churches of any flavor want to give (or withhold) their stamp of approval, that's fine and dandy. But no church authority should be able to prevent any marriage from being recognized by the State. Period.
