The next day Raymun was AGAIN absent! Soon his mother filed a missing report and my fears had come back to me and came true. Raymun disappeared. Now things were scaring me more. First Andre and Emily, then Melanie, Corallines‘….death and now Raymun?! Who’s next? Oz? I stopped in the middle of the door was as I thought over what I’d just thought. No. Not Oz. No. Just then Oz rolled into class with a muscle shirt and jeans. “Alice? What’s wrong?” he asked grabbing my shoulders looking at me with ocean blue eyes as I realized I was crying. “Alice?” Oz asked grabbing my shoulders looking at me with ocean blue eyes. “I-I think your next” I mumbled looking at him in horror. Oz sighed and hugged me tightly as he whispered “I’m not going anywhere”. I couldn’t stop the lump that began to form in my throat but I managed one word “..ok”. How was Oz that calm….
Oz and I walked along the river side by side. “No worries Alice! Stop making that face!” he barked grabbing my face. “Yok yust yet yo!” I tried saying but he had a death grip on my face. Then out of no where his face turned confused and blank. “Yat?” trying once more to talk as his face began to scare me. Silence and chirping crickets was all to be heard till Oz said “…fishy face…”. He released my face and we both cracked up.
After laughing for awhile my worries came back. “Alice please. I hate when your worried” Oz whined looking at me with hazel eyes now. “Sorry but its either you or me Oz. I think its you though…” I muttered looking at the glittery flowing river. Ozs sigh was all I heard in the silence that fell upon us. Suddenly Oz spoke with a different tone, one I’ve heard countless times but never recognized, “Alice…you’re a dear friend and I would never leave you. Your practically the world…”. Now after hearing Oz talk like this I look at him to find him staring at his sweaty palms, and his face a little darker. “Oz? What’s wrong?” I asked inching closer to him. Seeing Oz lost with words was odd to see especially since Oz was the calm smart type.
“Alice…I…” he tried to continue.
Suddenly a presence was behind us and slowly, in unison, we turned around to see four ghostly figures. A scream crawled up my throat but as soon as I opened my mouth a pale, white, cold hand shot over it. “Hey Alice” the figure said with a musical tone, after blinking a couple of times I realized it was Raymun! I tried to talk but my words only came out in muffles. “Raymun?” Oz said looking at the pale Raymun “dude are you a ghost?”. The other figure stepped forward “You retard. We aren’t ghosts”.
Happiness filled my entire body and once Raymun took his hand off my mouth I couldn’t help but scream with joy “Emily! Raymun!” I embraced my two friends but pulled away quickly shivering “Why are you two so cold?” I asked. Soon another figure stuck his hand out and made a funny pucker face with his other hand on his hip “Fine! don’t recognized me.” I knew exactly who that was from that stance and no sooner did I recognize the last figure “Andre! Melanie!” I cried embracing the two but again I pulled away quickly shivering more. Oz suddenly hugged me from behind and I saw him glare. “Oz? Why are you glaring?” Oz didn’t reply he just let go and stayed next to me on guard.
Then Melanie and Emily stepped forward but Melanie seemed to have struggle with taking her steps. “I don’t think that’s Melanie, Emily, Raymun. They’re to different” Oz whispered slowly working his arm around my shoulders.
“Don’t be silly Oz. They’re just pale and have a musical voice…” though saying just that was easier then to believe that these four were really my friends.
“Oh come on Alice. He’s retarded” Emily chimed
“Alice…” Raymun mumbled
“Lets go home. Now “Oz said with anger and worry. I glanced at each of them and four different expressions was all I saw before I left. Confusion. Anger. Blankness. Longing.
