RING-RING my alarms third alarm rang. Late. Walking into K-102 Ms. Hurley’s classroom was never easy when your late but in this case she happened to be busy with her laptop. I slid into my seat silently next to Gabriel Johnson. ‘What a jock…’ I thought as he flirted with Rachel Jackson.
“Hey stop watching a flirt and write the notes you missed out!” Oz whispered behind me as he slipped his notes onto my desk.
“Thanks” I whispered back.
“No prob”
I suddenly remembered Raymun and looked diagonally back to see Raymun absent. “Yea Ray isn’t here but he’ll be back. Don’t worry” Oz whispered probably because of the expression on my face. Yet even with Ozs reassurance my mind only thought two words Raymun disappeared… I shook the thought away and copying the notes down.
The next day Raymun was again absent. As the bell rang for the end of first period Oz and I walked towards the lunch room.
“Don’t worry! Rays fine”
“I know but…”
“No buts ok?”
“How are you so sure?”
“ I just know” Oz said with the End-of-conversation look. I hate how stubborn he was and how he only got his way because he was taller then me by 11’ inches “yea because your taller?” I said under my breath with annoyance. Oz looked at me and grabbed me into a headlock “Does my height bother you?”. I pushed away from him and ran for the lunch room.
Shoving the door open I froze in step as a loud crash flooded the air. Oz was about to grab me but he too heard the crash. Slowly I opened the lunch door and found Gabriel on the floor with food all over him and Rachel with spaghetti all on her face and shirt. The room was soon filled with gasps as the food slipped down her face. Oz had to wrap his black jacket around his face to hold in his laughter as I had to do the same but with my hands. Gabriella Danes was the first to burst out laughing and soon followed by everyone else. One huge old hand squeezed my shoulder and whispered into my ear “Ms. Ramirez. You have kitchen duty today”. Principal Michaels. One guy you shouldn’t mess with. “Yes sir…” was my only reply.
