Part Three

Dinner was beyond spectacular.

Emma was nervous when she came, wondering if Kenna would behave, but her fears were unfounded, as she was very well behaved.

She wanted to wear her church clothes.” Henry said as they came back downstairs from putting Kenna to bed.

The little girl got a little demanding when she wanted Emma to tuck her in, not her father, but when Henry objected, Emma told Kenna why not have them both tuck her in. It was a simple task, the child smiling as she fell asleep. Emma felt a little warm about it. The girl even snuck in a kiss on Emma’s cheek. The thought made her happy. Not like she felt toward Henry, but… proud of her. “I told her she could wear them when dogs sprouted wings and flew. She wasn’t to upset though when I suggested the simple dress that she did wear.

Emma felt a smile creeping onto her face that had been threatening to break since Kenna had kissed her. This time, it was a different warm and fuzzy feeling, the only kind Henry could give her. It felt good.

She was well mannered and very nice company.” That was all Emma could say without betraying her smile to Henry.

Well, I taught her that.” Henry said proudly, “Well, I taught her some anyway… Can’t take all the credit knowing my manners….

Emma felt a giggle coming, but stifled it before saying, “Yes, I remember your mother hitting you before dinner that one night… I’m surprised you didn’t have broken hands growing up, since you are a very big pig.

Ahhh…. Well, as I grew older I learned how to dodge her hitting.” Henry said.

Emma looked at him and saw his special smile she never saw unless he was joking with her. This time, the smile on her face broke out, and she looked away, shy he had seen the smile that accompanied the fuzzy feeling he gave her. It was a very powerful feeling, something that always took her by surprise.

I got something special for us tonight to drink in front of the fire.” Henry said leading her to the couch in front of a little fire in the fireplace, “I saw it and had to let you try it.

Emma suddenly got nervous. Henry knew she didn’t drink.

By the time she realized he had left her sitting on the floor with her back on the couch, Emma couldn’t say anything to stop him. He had returned with two wine glasses and something behind his back.

Our drink tonight!” He said placing the bottle on the table.

Emma was about to protest when she looked at the label closer. She then looked at Henry, who had a wide grin on his face.

Henry!” she said almost smiling herself.

Emma playfully punched him in the arm as he sat down and filled the glasses with sparkling cider. She felt like she was laughing on the inside at his little prank. She was so close to actually admitting to herself she loved him.

Cheers.” He said handing her a glass, and raising his own clinking them. Emma smiled back at him and drank her drink slowly, savoring the tingling taste of the cider, while Henry quickly downed half the glass. “Ahhh!” he said after drinking, “Them is good apples!

Emma smiled at him as they both set their glasses down in front of them on coasters on the wooden coffee table. She watched as he leaned back, his left arm resting on the couch behind her, and his right reaching around her, pulling her close. She snuggled close to him, laying her head on his shoulder as she watched the little fire before them. She snuggled closer, placing her arms around Henry. He was so comfortable.

He began stroking her hair, something she found reassuring. Then she pulled away and looked at him seriously.

I thought you had something to say about a job?

Henry looked at her sleepily, “You wanna talk about that now? I thought we could rest a while.” He sat back and took her hand, “It’s been a long day… and I thought you would like to rest.

Emma placed a hand on the one Henry used to hold hers, “I would like to know what you think first.

Henry looked up at her with his special smile. He looked into her eyes, smiling brightly, and pulled her hair back behind her ear.

You are so wonderful.” He said placing the hand he used to move her hair onto her hand that was over his, then squeezed her hands gently, and then took them away. He sighed as he looked into her eyes and said, “Keep this in an open mind when I say this… It’s just my idea, no one else’s.

Emma narrowed her eyes a little, but she nodded. She was desperate for a new job. Henry nodded back, then looked down.

I was told,” he began, “That you love animals, and would do anything to help them…” he looked up and said, “and you seem to love helping people too…” He smiled at her, “I figured that out by myself…

She didn’t move, but he seemed to get it right. She hated to see animals suffering, and she also loved to help people. She let him continue.

I know of an animal clinic that is loosing its secretary. There is no medical training necessary for this job, and the owners are willing to train anyone who works there in the filing system.” He then began rubbing the back of his head, and looked down. Emma knew him well enough now to know when he was nervous… This is where the hitch came in. “The thing is, is it’s my parents clinic at Flower Hill.

No.” Emma said definitely.

Well, now hear me out!” he said looking at her, “You can do a month of work for them, and then you can say ‘No’.” He then looked down and towards the fireplace and added sheepishly, “I was hoping that in addition to that…. You would stay at Larkin Hill where I need a decorator.

Emma remained silent. It was tempting, but his parents…

Mama and Pa wouldn’t bother you there….” He said holding her hand and looking at it, “Though I would ask that Pa come and get you when you go to work, and go home. It’s not that I don’t think you can’t fight, just that there are things in the woods that can hurt you if you don’t know how to fight them.” He looked at her seriously, “Plus it’s coming up on hunting season up there too…

But what about my house here Henry?” She didn’t want to leave it. It was hers.

Can’t your sister watch it for just a month?” That was an idea. Her sister hadn’t recently blown it up whenever she was off at Henry’s… Plus, she could get Christopher to go over and check up on her…

And before you say it, LB and the kitten can go too.” He held up his head in a mockingly snobbish way, “Mama and Pa include any pet treatment for free to their employees.

Emma lifted an eyebrow. Well, none of their cats had died since she knew them.

Well, I still don’t know… I’ll think about it.” Was all Emma said as she turned around and laid her head in Henry’s lap. The least he could do was be her pillow for awhile.

Henry pulled her hair back from her face and smiled at her. While it scared her to have him do that, and the urge to slap his hand away was there, she felt somewhere, deep down, it was ok, and all right. He continued to look at her for a while, making her curious why the Hell she looked back.

Why are you looking at me?” she asked narrowing her eyes.

Why not?” he said smiling his smile for her, “Sometimes, words aren’t necessary.

She smiled her smile for him, reaching up to his face and touching his cheek. It was warm, and felt a little like leather. Years in the sun, Emma thought, he works hard. She lowered her hand, and he took it in his, enveloping it softly.

You’re too comfortable.” She said turning towards the fire.

Thanks.” He said chuckling.

There was silence for a while before he spoke again.

About a year before Rachel died, we were at my parent’s house,” He said placing his other hand around her waist, “and as we were sitting there, the discussion between our parents went to why some curse words were four letters, and some not.” Emma turned and looked up at him, and he looked down at her smiling his smile, “Rachel suddenly broke her silence between us and said, ‘You know, ‘Love’ is a four letter word too, so does that mean it’s a curse of the good kind?’” Henry chuckled and placed a hand on her face saying, “She started a sampler project trying to write out all the four letter words that expressed things that made her happy, but she died before it was finished.

Emma reached up again and touched his face. That woman was right. Love was a powerful word, and depending on how you used it, it could be like a curse word: A word that could create a powerful spell on any one. Henry stroked her cheek with his thumb and lowered his head towards her, seeming to close the distance between them.

I wish that when I tell you for the first time that I love you, you understand what I mean when I say that.” He said slowly.

Emma mimicked his stroking on his cheek. She felt safe, secure here. They almost had an argument, but both had held their tongues. She loved the fact they both had grown in their relationship, and that they were at the point where they could at any time say the important words. She didn’t feel scared with him around, and that she could trust him.

I don’t want you to leave…” was all she said.

Henry let out a little chuckle, “Why should I? You make me happy, and I too don’t want you to leave me.

Can I love you?” she said sitting up and looking him in the eye, “You won’t leave me?

Well,” Henry said turning his smile into his stupid grin, “I do have to work…

Emma hit his arm scrunching up her face, “You!

Me!” he said laughing.

Emma giggled, and then, without warning, he wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her close. It wasn’t tight, but it was snug. Emma didn’t feel threatened, yet felt herself smiling as he smiled back. She felt herself wrapping her arms around him and snuggling into his chest.

I will never leave you unless you tell me too.” She heard his voice through his chest, as she felt him slowly stroking her hair, “I’ll be by your side till the day we must part.

Emma pulled away from him, and looked up at him, “Not in the near future.

No.” he said smiling, “Not that I can see.

Emma smiled again and snuggled into his chest. After a while, she felt him back away.

I love you Emma." he said sounding serious as he looked into her eyes, "Never doubt it.

Emma looked down and played with the buttons on his shirt, “How can I?” she then looked up at him and said, “I love you too.

He smiled his special smile, and she felt happy too. It wasn’t as if she said it to please him, but to express the only thing the feeling about him could be. He pulled her close, and held her there, and she didn’t object to the hug, snuggling into his chest again. She smiled to herself, thinking that the hugs he gave her were special in the sense that they were one of a kind, and only given to her.

Emma sighed contently. She would give Henry her heart. She knew he could hurt her, however, somewhere, deep down, she knew he wouldn’t. Not like Gabriel. No, a small, little part of her knew Henry was different.

She sat there with Henry for a long time, long enough to grow so comfortable and secure, that before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.
