I have just started Scott Westerfeld's most recent book, and I wish that I had done so much sooner. He has expanded the idea of Darwinism into a science of mixing the "lifethreads" of animals into new "beasties" in a time of war. Each creature has a mix of genes that makes it perfectly suited to a job. There a messenger lizards, airships, and many other useful animals and I have just started the book. There are also many interesting machines and the two main characters are just mysterious enough to keep my interest completely centered on this book.
