Fanfiction Chapter 1
Katherine stared at the massive castle, her brown eyes wide with disbelief, mouth open to show that she was dumbfounded. I leave my friends and family because some weirdos think I'm a witch, though they could be right. To think it was true. At least I am away from my mother and sister so I can't complain. She held onto the lantern to keep it from flying into the lake. Once the hull of the boat lodged itself into the shore, Katherine and the other students got off, following the giant of a man who had taken them across the lake to a set of doors. Totally ignoring everyone around her, Katherine leaned against the cold stone wall, arms folded across her chest. She let go in one ear and out the other the talk of the other students, who were blabbering on and on about what house they were hoping to get in or what classes they wanted to take. As if Katherine cared. At some unheard signal, the students, all apparently first years like herself, headed towards the massive set of doors, which swung open to reveal an elderly lady dressed in green from her head to her feet.
"Greeting students. Welcome to Hogwarts. I am Professor McGonagall, Head of Gryffindor and the Transfiguration teacher." She glanced at everyone in the group. "If you would please follow me, it is time for the sorting."
The giant doors slammed behind the group as the last one piled in. Katherine, being the closest to the door at that point, jumped as it did so. Everyone's attention was at the enchanted ceiling or the four long tables. Another table was facing the four, obviously the teachers. Katherine studied each one briefly, stopping longer at the two that stuck out the most. One was on the short side, so it seemed, with golden hair that matched his eyes. The other was next to him, but Katherine only caught a brief glance at him, as he was more interested in the book he was reading. The only thing that made him stand out, at least in her mind, was the markings on his face. He looked up once and lowered his glasses, staring at a student who had moved to the back of the group, then back to his book.
Katherine turned her gaze back to the golden haired teacher, noticing that his red coat was so much like her own. Whatever he is teaching, I want that class! Katherine's attention was ripped from him when an elderly man with long silver hair, both facial and back, stood. "Welcome, first years, and welcome back to those returning students." The man's gaze swept across the room. "A reminder to returning students, and a warning for the first years, the Forbidden Forest is indeed like its name, forbidden to all students. The those new here, I am Albus Dumbledore, the head master at Hogwarts. I do not want to keep you from eating, as I am sure you had a long journey. But before the sorting begins, I leave you with four words: chocra, pusble, rowon, and bakra."
McGonagall set up a stool as the headmaster sat down to applause and whispers among the first years about the sanity of Dumbledore. A tattered hat was set on the stool and a scroll unrolled. Katherine's stomach growled. I hope this doesn't take too long. Katherine looked at the blonde teacher again as names were called one by one. She even missed her name being called until the only other person left elbowed her. Giving a sheepish grin, Katherine sat on the stool as the hat was placed on her head. To her surprise, it was muttering before yelling "Slytherin".
Katherine jumped down from the stool and went to the table that was standing in applause. Sitting down in one of the last remaining seats, shortly joined by the last student, she stared mouth watering at the plates that magically filled. She grabbed a turkey drumstick. I think I could get used to this. Might even like it here. Slytherin seems like an awesome house to be in. While Katherin was eating, she couldn't help but keep staring at the teacher's table.
