It has occurred to me that since I work with animals and we all know that death is eventually going to happen to our beloved pets. I have a sad but unfortunately true story to tell. There once was a very old, but still vibrant Italian greyhound, yes she had bad breath and yes she was old, but still acted much like a puppy. Her owners however were growing ever increasingly tired of taking care of her. For years they have tried with Dr. H and Dr. Y to euthenize her. Both Dr's found doing so unethical since she had no health issues other then bad breath. Easy to be solved with a dental. The owners of this lovely old lady switch to Dr. C. They try to persuade Dr. C to euthenze the animal, "She is old, and has bad breath" they cry out. "Could you please euthenize her, we are tired of taking care of her", they add. Dr. C convinces them to do a dental, a routine cleaning of the death much like your dentist does when you visit them. Except the pets are placed under a sleep like state, cause it is in fact very painful to do so wake and very inhumane.
Months of waiting after, again the owners of this distinguished lady try for euthenia. Please note dear reader, I love this dog, would have gladly adopted her had the owners chosen or been offered such and option. Thus she could have been granted a life to live the rest of her days, loved instead of pushed to the side, or a bore of a chore to take of. The day of wreaking comes and here they are, asking again, this time the deed is done. I twas told dear reader cause of it being the owners right to decide, my voice to try and obtain such a animal is not allowed. This placed Dr. C in my opinion an all about money doctor, and thus, yes I do wish I could punch him in the face, but yes I need my job. Sadly, this lovely old distinguished lady full of life yet to live, year to still be loved was cut short cause her owners failed to do a few things. First is research her breed, know your animals breed, if not do not b***h that they live to long. Its not the vet or vet staff's fault that you fail to notice or research your animals background. Second, to busy with work or what ever to lack in your responsibility to an animal. Animals are indeed a hefty responsibility, I speak for myself owning a dog, 2 cats and several fish. I love them all, and yes their needs are well met. And lastly, putting down an animal that has no health issues other then bad breath, just makes you a ill equipped owner. Thus you are the kind I hate dealing with. You refuse to notice, and rather spend money to take the problem away instead of dealing with it.
I will forever miss this Italian Greyhound, named Gracie. Yes I am happy she no longer has to live in a world where self is placed on a higher pedistil then an animals welfare. Yes she trembled, yes she shaked, yes she had some incompitance, but she was full of life, still wanted to run and play, still wanted love, and to deliver kisses..even with bad breath.
Do not sit there and pity her, be thankful instead, but always know even though I am a kennel assistant, I will fall in love with your dog as much or even more then you do. I have helped with such task, and every time I have to walk way after and cry. The day I stop crying is the day I find a new job.
