Virginia's Adventures in Virtual Land
The story of a young Luddite and her adventures in an alternate computer reality.
Sing Willow, Willow, Willow
The above is from Desdomena's song, but for some reason I've been thinking of Ophelia. User Image Must be the fact that I've found myself wandering along willow encrusted riverbanks the last few days. The good Venetian that she was, Desdemona would have had better sense than to go splashing about in one of those Renaissance dresses. Both suffered from misplaced love, of course. Thank goodness I lucked out in that regard. Love is what keeps me going, most days. heart heart

Personally, I think Hamlet was a wishy-washy jerk. Sacrificing all just for revenge? rolleyes What a total guy. More to the point, what a total doofus. To be fair, the Bard was in a terrible mood when he wrote that one. I can only imagine what it would be like to try to create right after losing a son. I have difficulty enough writing when I'm lonely, much less when in grief.

Maybe the heat is drawing me to the riverbanks. They certainly do know how to make rivers and streams in Oregon, and wandering the banks is food for the soul. But it's hump day (day three on the road for those who haven't read all my entries), and once again I beg my hypothetical reader's indulgence as I become melancholy for a moment. cry

All around my hat
I will wear the green willow
All around my hat
For a twelve-month and a day
And if anyone should ask me
The reason why I'm wearing it
It's all for my true love
Who's far, far away

Ok, mood over. Dear hypothetical reader, remember it is hump day, and that means tomorrow will bring back perky travel-happy Virginia. In the meantime, at least Oxbridge and I can meet in our virtual world. Last night we spent a virtual afternoon on the lawn talking to the "Tree of DOOM". No weeping willow this, it was a very self-assured tree who had no qualms about giving it's views out on the puny humans that dared approach it. Well, actually it was a girl who had hidden her avatar behind a tree, but if positioned correctly, it looks like the tree is talking. It's a bit of a running gag in Gaia, but this "tree" had a sense of fun. I would pretend to supplicate her with sandwiches and cookies, and she would throw pronouncements of doom upon the less-than-respectful passerbys. (Side note: What is it with men and trees? I mean, why not just pick any old spot? It must be some atavistic marking behavior. Sheesh. Let me tell you, the Tree of DOOM was not pleased!).

Oh sure, it was childish, but I am totally over any need to pretend to be "adult" around here. This is where we can let our hair down, and frankly, after a day of having to be occasionally uptight at work, I need that sort of thing. I can't run about yelling "Placate the Tree of DOOM lest she smite us!" at work. Not done. Am I hiding behind my avatar so I can act like a little girl again? Maybe. But I would submit a second possibility. We hide behind our everyday facade in order to pretend that we aren't children anymore. My stiff, sarcastically humored workself is much more of an act than V. Wolfe is. In anonymity, honesty I think.

But maybe I'm just coming up with sentitious philosophical reasons to justify my sillyness. Perhaps the truth is that I am, not so deep down, a tremendously silly person and only social pressure keeps me on the straight and narrow in daily life. Well, we must do what we must do to keep our job and keep puppy in kibble.

Her hand on her bosom, her head on her knee,
Sing: Tree of DOOM! Tree of DOOM! Tree of DOOM!

With Apologies to the Upstart Crow,

V.

Very good, and I totally agree.
To quote Jaques, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." (I noticed your Shakespeare reference.)
I also enjoyed the tree of doom bit. It cracked me up for some reason. xd
It is a very well written piece, nice job.

Hypothetical readers begone, for Admiral Mithmaur has read this entry!

I love hiding behind trees in towns, yeah it's immature but whatever. Who gets to pretend they are talking trees in real life huh? Well your travels do sound very interesting and it must be amazing seeing all these different places! I love your photos by the way. They capture your descriptions beautifully.
