What a strange and amazing play I saw last night!
The teachers in my English Department had a little social and went downtown to the Old Courthouse theatre to see a production of this play. I was pleasantly surprised. It's interesting that in all the years I have heard of this play, I really had no clue what it was about:
1960's social etiquette, drinking, marriage, lies, violence, politics, stereotypes and societal change.
Since it's from the modern era of theatre, I expected the storyline and, more significantly, the writing to be much more current, tolerant and progressive, but it surprised me to see so many changes that I haven't really considered. Shocking racial slurs, gender inequality and class distinctions all came up in the play, and in a way that really made me think. 40 years isn't that long ago, so it's much more emotional to see the differences in society than it is to witness an account from, say, Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde.
Oh, how our world has changed in the last 40 years! If you want to see a snapshot of what I mean, then rent the movie. I am sure Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton do it justice, since they make an amazing Katherine and Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew. It was a good night out. It made me think, and it made me appreciate that even though our contemporary world is certainly not perfect, it has changed in many ways for the better, even in the last 40 years.
