Entry #31
The Chase

As I gaze upon the frozen lake,
I feel my heart ache
Cold. Desolate. Empty.
Not a trace of nature I see

I make to leave,
when I see a sight to grieve
A lonely male hawk perched above,
sitting alone without a love

Though magnificent in all its glory,
Its bent wing tells me its story
The red of its tail reminds me not to pity,
the fire within was its entreaty

That touch of color, that splash of wine
Held the flames of forever divine
But I had never seen a creature so careless
Diving to and fro, and making a mess

The bird of prey did not at all impress me
Its attempts at showing off, its lively esprit
I made to leave, this time for good
I would hide myself deep in the wood

But follow me it did, intent was its purpose
I could not escape it nor elude it, thus,
I ran deeper and deeper, getting cuts on the way
A paranoia arose: I was its prey

Gripping fear took my heart and my mind
I never was so closely entwined,
to another in such a relation
But desperate I was to escape this connection

I kept running and running till I could run no more
I was sure it was about to croak, "Nevermore"
I waited for it to make its final assult
Upon my panting heart, the impenetrable vault

But the attack did not come
Even as I lay succumb
I chanced a look, a glance behind
The hawk stared at me in kind

We did not speak, we dare not move
Lest the other disapprove
I found myself calm and collect
The hawk stayed at a distance with respect

Slowly it ascended into the sky,
always at a distance as though it was shy
I smiled in wonder at the interesting thing
And admired its ability with its broken wing

When suddenly it fell from the air,
happiness replaced by despair
I ran out to it with an open arm
Never to let it come to harm

The hawk landed neatly in my embrace
And it looked away as though in disgrace
I merely smiled and carried it home
Where it would either stay or roam

I found a friend in the woods that day
Only when I opened my heart did my fears allay
It never left my side, always watching me with care
The paranoia gone and the deathly stare

Do not let fear worm its way to your heart
For friendships will never start
And you will be left to stare at the lake
And feel your heart freeze and beginning to ache
