Ribbons of Light
(a fairy tale I wrote for english class)

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of righteousness, there was a princess named Eva. Eva loved animals, so she often asked her parents, the king and queen, if she could visit her cousin’s farm. Eva’s favorite animal of all though, was the horses. She would ride them around all day until the sun went down.

Eva didn’t like her cousin Tim; he would always pull her hair and tell her that she will never make a good queen. One day, Tim brought Eva to the slaughter house where the animals got their heads cut off so they could be cooked and eaten. Eva did not like seeing the animals getting killed, but Tim made her watch it any way. He told her that his father was planning to sneak into her house in the middle of the night and cut off her head, just like he does to the animals. Eva was shocked. “Why would he do such a thing?” Eva asked in fear. “Because you are no better than the rest of the animals.” he laughed.

Eva foolishly believed her cousin. Because she was so afraid, she could not sleep that night, so she decided the only thing to do was run away. This is exactly what her cousin wanted her to do.

Alone and desperate, Eva went to seek the help of her good friend the fortune teller. She thought that, if anyone, the fortune teller would know what to do. Upon, entering the hut, an old woman croaked, “I was expecting you, dear.” Eva giggled, “You always say that you silly old bag.” The woman was flustered, “That’s no reason for you to insult me.” “Just tell, me my dear friend, is my Uncle planning to slaughter me, if so, what in the world should I do?” Eva squeaked. “Oh my,” the fortune teller gasped, “What a ghastly question, let me look into my crystal ball.”

The room was silent. “Yes, I see it now, oh, oh my.” “What is it woman! Is it bad?!” Eva cried. “Indeed it is, you were right Eva, he is planning the unthinkable.” The fortune teller muttered. “Ah!” Eva shrieked. “Calm yourself Eva! There is hope for you yet! Take these greens and go into the forest. There, you will find a winged unicorn. Don’t be afraid Eva, feed the greens to it, and it will show you to a land in which you truly belong. You will be safe to live there.” Eva jumped to her feet. “Thank you so much my friend! I owe my life to you!” she exclaimed as she took the greens from the woman’s hand. “It was no problem dear, good luck!” the woman called as Eva dashed out the door towards the forest.
