Shadows of Fear, Chapter 2
“Sky? Come on, it’s time to get up.”
My dad’s voice filtered into my room as I stirred; awaken from my now pleasant dream.
“Be right there…” I muttered, turning over onto my back and rubbing my eyes. I sat up, yawned, and threw off my covers, walking over to my dresser. As I drew nearer to it, a thirteen-year-old girl came into view in my mirror. Her dark brown hair was a complete mess, and sleepy stuff encircled her sky blue eyes. Truly a non-beauty. Once my hair was combed out, though, and I had washed my face in the bathroom attached to my bedroom, I looked a whole lot better. Dressed in my usual dark jeans, sky blue t-shirt, black fingerless gloves, and tennis shoes, I looked like your average girl. I hurriedly put my hair into a ponytail and brushed back the hair that was too short to be put up out of my eyes, my left rabbit ear drooping a little. I then put on a silver chain necklace with a guitar charm and looked at my reflection in the mirror.
I look so much like my mom, it hurts…
I picked up the picture frame on my tidy dresser top and looked at it. Inside it was my mom, myself, and Dan on our last day with our mom. I stared at my mother before I set the picture frame down. She had chocolaty brown hair with one small silver streak in her bangs from when she was my age, and cocoa brown eyes. The thing that made her different from other moms is that she had wings; great, big, beautiful gray angel wings. I smiled at the picture. “Good morning, Mom. I hope you’re safe…” I whispered, then exited my room.
I walked down the hallway, my hands in my jean pockets, and entered the kitchen. “Morning, Dad,” I said, taking my place at the breakfast table.
“Look who decided to get up this morning,” Dan said, sitting right across from me. He had dark brown hair, like me, but also had sparkling green eyes. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t inherit any animal genes from Dad, or any abnormal genes from Mom---except for being able to control the weather, that is. That he got from Mom.
“Oh, shut up,” I said, munching on a piece of buttered toast. “At least I don’t dress like a total slob.”
“Baggy jeans are in style!”
“I can see your underwear. You know how disgusting that is?”
“Well at least I don’t destroy everything I touch.”
“Take that back!” I shouted, standing up. “Unless you want your face burnt off, that is.” I started taking off one of my gloves and advanced towards Dan.
“I take it back!” He said as I lightly touched him with my gloved hand.
“That’s what I thought…” I put my glove back on and sat back down.
Dan knows that I’m sensitive about one of my powers. So he attacks me using that as bait.
Oh, that’s right. I forgot…You don’t know who I am, do you?

My name’s Skystar Lightside, daughter of Silverfire Lightside and Luckpaw. I have powers that are way different than anyone in my family. Using the guitar I got when I was three, I can transform the sound energy into energy waves, different intensities for different chords and notes. But I can use the guitar as a regular electric one by turning a dial on it, and I can also create energy disks to ride around on by turning the dial and disguise it as a necklace. My other power is very destructive. Mom said that if someone kidnapped me and used my powers for evil, I could destroy the entire world…So Dad and Mom made sure that I was safe. My other power: I can disintegrate, destroy, or kill anything if I touch it with my bare hands. I don’t use this one very much, and if I do, it’s because the object I’m using it on either needs to die, or I just hate it that much. It takes a lot to make me that mad and use that power. But what I just did in the kitchen was only for kidding around---Dan knows that I’d never /actually/ burn his face off, but since I have cooler powers than he does, he has to have something to tease me about, doesn’t he?

Dan got up, put his plate in the sink, and walked off into his room, most likely to either watch T.V. or do absolutely nothing on his computer.
“Sky?” My dad called from the living room.
“Yeah?” I replied, tipping my plate into the sink.
“Can you come here for a minute? I need to talk to you.”
“’Kay, hold on.” I tugged on my gloves and brushed the hair out of my eyes, walking into the living room. “Yeah, Dad?”
Dad was sitting at the computer, most likely working on something for his job. He turned around in the chair as I sat down on the couch.
“You know why your mother became evil, right?”
“Yeah. You told us when we were ten.”
“But did I tell you who she was working for and why?”
“No, I don’t think you did…”
“She’s working for someone called Graystorm Darkside, or John Auburn. He’s the son of a villain your mom called ‘Grayknife’, and if you know the story well, she killed him when she was around your age.”
“So…This John person’s his son? And what does this have to do with me?”
“John’s looking for you, Sky. And I’m afraid that he’s brainwashed Sil…”
“Mom said that someone might someday…”
“And she was right. So, Sky, to save both yourself and your mom, you need to listen very well,” Dad got up and started walking down the hallway, motioning for me to follow. “John’s been in the city ever since your mom killed Grayknife, looking for her and wanting to avenge his father’s death. He came close to capturing her once, but the Teen Titans stopped him from getting away, like they always did.” We walked into his and mom’s room and he went over to the closet. I sat down on the bed, nodding slowly, trying to sort stuff out. Dad opened the closet and began rummaging around in the top part for something. “Ah ha!” He said, pulling out a dusty old shoebox.
“So what do you want me to do?” I asked as he sat down on the bed too and began rummaging through the shoe box.
“You, Sky, are going to go back into the past and stop John from ever capturing your mom in the future.” He pulled out a test tube full of what looked like a silvery mist, but it wasn’t a gas and it wasn’t a liquid. It seemed to be a mixture of both.
“Now, when you get to the past, I don’t know what part of the city you’ll end up in, but when you do, try to find the Titans Tower. Don’t tell anyone that you’re from the future and don’t trust anyone unless they themselves are Titans. If all goes well, Robin will let you stay for a night or two until he decides if you can join the team or not. Hopefully, with your powers, he’ll let you join. If he doesn’t, then you can tell him, and only him, that you’re from the future, okay?”
“Go to Tower, find Robin, join team, if not, say I’m from the future. I think I got it.”
“Okay. When someone lets you in, tell them that you’re looking for a Silverfire Lightside. When you find your mom, talk to her alone in her room, and you can tell her and my past self about being our daughter and the danger in the future. Here’s a picture of your mom when she was thirteen so you can find her easily.”
“Okay. Don’t worry, Dad, I’ll be fine.” I took the test tube and picture from him. “Now, how’s this supposed to take me back to the past?”
“Uncork it, close your eyes, and think of the Titans Tower in the past, and tip out the contents.”
I shut my eyes, thinking really hard, and turned the test tube upside down. I couldn’t see it, but a white light began to swirl around me, swallowing me up. I kept my eyes shut and continued to think of the Tower. Soon, a wind erupted beneath my feet, but I never quit thinking about my destination. Ten seconds after the wind started, it stopped, and the light faded. I stood on the sandy shore of Jump City, facing Titans Tower---or, at least, I /thought/ it was Titans Tower. I looked at the picture my dad gave me, and nodded. It was. I stuck the picture in my pocket, threw the test tube into the bay, and grabbed my charm, thinking about a guitar. It glowed for a minute, and I let go, the ball of light becoming larger. Soon, it took the shape of a full-sized guitar. I slid it on, turned the dial, and strummed a chord softly. Two small energy disks appeared in front of me and I hopped on, one foot on each disk. Within a matter of seconds, I had zoomed across the bay and was standing on solid ground in front of the Tower.
“Okay, Sky, calm down. Just do what Dad told you and then you can go home,” I whispered, taking a few deep breaths before I stepped up to the door and knocked, adjusting my guitar strap. It was a couple minutes before anyone opened the door, but at least I was able to calm myself down a bit.
Until I saw /who/ opened the door, that is.
“Yes?” He asked.
I just stared at the ground, my left bunny ear drooping. “I’m looking for Silverfire Lightside. Does she happen to be a member of the team?”
“I think. Hey, nice guitar.”
“Thanks…”
There was an uncomfortable silence in which all I could do was bite my lower lip, fiddle with my guitar strap, and stand there uncomfortably.
“So what powers do you have?” He asked.
“Look, I just really need to talk to Sil, so can I please come in? It’s getting kinda cold out here.”
“Okay, then.” He stood aside and let me in, shut the door, and led me to the main room. He then left me standing by the door to talk to one of the Titans on the couch. The girl he was talking to seemed to just be sitting there, watching a robot and a green dude play a game, some other boy’s arm around her shoulders. I noticed something odd about the boy who let me in and the girl of them. They both had fox ears, and the boy had a tail. I wondered if they were brother and sister or something. I just stood by the door, looking around, the butterflies in my stomach acting up again. Some of the Titans were staring at me, but others were too busy doing whatever it was that they were doing to notice me. The boy who let me in and his sister (I’m guessing that they are brother and sister) turned and looked at me, and my ear, which had been pretty straight while the boy was talking, started drooping again. I just pretended to be too interested in the paneling to notice it. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the boy walking towards me again, and I looked down.
“Mom said that Sil’s probably in her room, so follow me,” he said, taking my hand. Our surroundings melted and soon, we were in front of a door in a dimly lit hallway. My head started to spin, and my ear was drooping so low that my right one began to droop.
The boy opened the door and stuck his head in. “Sil? There’s a new kid who says that she absolutely /must/ talk to you.”
“What about?” A voice said, although I couldn’t see who was speaking.
“I don’t know. Probably about the nearest institute or something. She doesn’t seem to be all here, if you know what I’m talking about.”
“Hey! Be nice!” A squishy monkey came flying out of nowhere and hit the boy in the face.
I gave him a swift kick in the ankle to tell him that I understood as well and I didn’t appreciate it one bit.
“Ouch,” he winced, limping away from the door and letting me in, throwing the monkey back. Sil threw the monkey once more, but this time, it hit the now closed door instead of the boy. I just stood in the doorway, looking around my mom’s room. My mom sat on her messy bed, dressed in a gray tank top and short shorts, her angel wings unfolded behind her, typing away at her laptop. She looked up, smiled, and flew over.
“Hiya! M’name’s Sil, but you can call me Sillie-chan if you want,” she greeted, smiling big.
“Hi…I’m Sky, from the future, and I’m your daughter,” I said slowly, not liking the fact that Mom was so close to my face.
“You’re my what?” She said, still smiling.
“Yours and Luck’s daughter…I came from the future.”
“Excuse me for a minute,” she said, no longer smiling. She raced to the bathroom, slammed the door, and threw up in the toilet. I winced, slowly becoming sick myself. The toilet flushed, and Sil came out of the bathroom, wiping her mouth on a tissue and throwing that away. She looked at me again, and raced back into the bathroom. I sighed. My mom is very goofy when she was my age.
Finally, Sil came out of the bathroom and DIDN’T throw up when she saw me, and so I was able to talk to her. I told her everything Dad said to.
“So…You’re looking for him, too?” Sil asked, trying to sort everything out.
“I guess. Dad wasn’t very clear when he told me. It was sort of a hurried last minute thing,” I replied. We were both sitting on her bed, my guitar transformed back into a necklace, letting the breeze from the window blow our hair away from our faces.
“Huh. So, did Alex open the door for you when you came?” Sil looked up, a devilish smirk on her face.
“A-Alex?” I asked, my face growing red and my ear drooping. “Wh-who’s Alex?”
“You know, the boy I threw the monkey at. He opened the door didn’t he?”
“I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about…”
“You like him, don’t you?”
“No I don’t!”
“Yes you do.”
“No I don’t!”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Admit it! I know you like him! There’s no denying me!”
I just stared at her, my face bright red and both of my ears drooping really low.
“Fine…” I said, looking at my hands in my lap. “Ilikeim.” I mumbled.
“What was that?” Sil asked.
“Ilikeim…” I repeated, a little louder.
“What? I’m a little deaf, say it again.”
“I LIKE HIM!” I shouted, then covered my mouth, both of my ears drooping so low they covered my eyes, and my face grew bright red.
“I KNEW IT!” Sillie shouted, jumping up to her feet.
“Just don’t tell him! Please!” I pleaded.
“Don’t worry, I won’t,” Sil said, falling on her bum. “Just so you know,” she whispered, motioning for me to move in closer. “Alex is from the future, too.”
I sat there and stared at my hands in my lap, feeling both of my ears droop and my face getting hotter.
“So…” I started. “Does that mean that the other girl with fox ears is from the future, too?” I looked up.
“Ari? Nah. She’s from the present.”
“Huh. I thought they were related…”
“They are. Alex is her son.”
“Oh…” I felt my face grow just a tad hotter.
“You blush easily…And what’s the matter with your ear?”
“It droops whenever I think of someone that I happen to like very much…” I mumbled. “Anyways, Dad said that I had to talk to a Robin person to join, right?”
“Yeah. I’ll talk to him for ya. If all goes well, you should probably be a member by tomorrow.”
“Thanks,” I said, smiling.
“Here,” Sil said, jumping off her bed and landing gracefully on her feet, waving her hands in a circle. “This’ll be your bed while you’re here.” Soon, a cloud formed underneath her hands, just as long as my bed back home is.
“Thanks.”
“No prob. Make yourself comfy.” Sil said, walking out the door.
I intended to…
