Chaos And Paradise
It’s hard to believe the very person I looked up to as a kid, the person I wanted to become, is now the person who I am struggling to defeat. I live in a fantasy world. Nothing is flawed yet it’s not exactly perfect either. It really seems more like a chaotic paradise. Like something similar to a science fiction novel or movie.
I knew nothing about my past. My brother who took care of me all my life made up stories about a family we never had. I didn’t learn about that till I was about 18. We were poor. We lived alone. While he worked I went to school. He never got to go to school. One day he came home depressed. I tried to cheer him up the way he’d cheer me up. I told him about the fake parents we never knew, how we would one day find them and be a family. He just snapped at me.
“I can’t understand how you still believe we have a family somewhere looking for us. You’re 18 now. Get it through your head, it’s time to face the facts, we were abandoned. If they wanted us we would have been with them all our lives.” He said
“But come on Zeliph, have,”
“Hope?” he interrupted “I’m tired of hiding what we are. What we’re capable of. These people living here on this planet, they won’t accept us for what we are. They’ll want to destroy us or capture us and run test on us.” He shouted angrily.
“You’re wrong about people, you don’t know every thing. You’d be surprised at how some people would aces the situation.”
“No Teji, I’m afraid you’re wrong. These people are all the same. They don’t care. They’ll be afraid of us, call us monsters. Well they’re the true monsters.”
“Kayly wasn’t afraid. She didn’t call me a monster. She understood. She…” I stopped. I knew I shouldn’t have said that. I let my brother know I let out our secret. Who knew if she’d keep the secret? But I trusted her.
Right after that argument we got into a fight. That whole event changed me. I became a more serious and grown up person, but not so much that I would forget who I was or how old I really was.
I never saw my brother after that. I moved in with Kayly because he parents felt bad that I was abandoned a second time. They really liked me anyway. News reports started coming in from all over the globe about weird deaths by animals. People we being killed by animals in places they couldn’t even survive in. Polar Bears in the Arabian countries or anacondas in Russia? At first it didn’t make sense, until I got that email. It was from anonymous but I opened it anyway.
“Hey baby brother. How is it going? Have you been watching the news? Pretty strange happenings huh? Those kinds of animals can’t survive in those kinds of places. If I didn’t know any better I’d say there were more of us. But I do know better. Or is there more of us? In any case you and I both know that it’s not you, so who is it?”
That’s our secret. My brother and I can transform into animals. Unbelievable I know, but true nonetheless.
And that’s how I got to where I am now. I’m leaving home. I’m going to hunt down my own brother to make him stop. When I was a lot younger I used to look up to him. But know he’s become the opposite. If you’re reading this than I’m already gone. I’m sorry I left with telling you mom, I’m glad I found you, but I need to stop him. I plan on coming back so don’t worry too much.
