In case some of you weren't already familiar with this horrific event, here is a link to the story on Yahoo! News.
I ... I was just appalled, really. How someone could be such a monster and commit such a horrible crime. I mean, those poor kids. They were just in school, trying to get an education, and persue their hopes and dreams academically, and that was so violently and unjustly ripped from them ...
I think that, in a time of disaster and chaos such as this, it's important for not only America, but the world, to come together and look at what we can do better to preserve the safety of our students, our employees, and each other. It's also important to set aside differences--pro-life or pro-choice, black or white, Wiccan or Catholic, gay or straight, whatever it may be that divides us--and try to make this world better and less likely to be subject to attacks and massacres and injustices such as this one.
No one deserves to go through that. No one deserves to be wounded by another, killed, or watch their friends die.
I'm not a big fan of President Bush. But my respect for him went up slightly when I read this:
"Schools should be places of safety, sanctuary and learning," President George W. Bush said Monday afternoon. "When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom in every American community."--George W. Bush, afternoon of Monday, April 16th, 2oo7
May we always carry this date in our hearts, as a constant reminder to keep our kids and our staff safe in their learning environment, and our workers safe in their working environment, and each other safe in the only world we've got.
So, if you would please pray for these people to whatever deity it is that you may worship, that would be wonderful. The dead, wounded, and scarred deserve that much.
