This was something I originally posted on another website a couple days ago, but I decided that posting it here would be wise as well. :3

I've noticed that there have been a lot of hackings on MySpace and Gaia accounts; y'all are all my friends, and I feel that I should speak out about this, even if it's not that serious. It's still a safety issue, and you never know who could hack you, what information could be spread about you, what items and how much gold could be stolen, what rumours it could lead to at school, et cetera. So, here's some information about hacking and some procautions that should be taken to prevent it.

What is a hacking?

Mirriam Webster Online defines "hacking" as gaining access to a computer (or program, by the way) illegally.

How do people hack?

There are special programs used for hacking, coding, and there are simple ways to do it. For example: say you give out your password to a friend, or you reveal a bit of personal information about you that might give away your password--assuming it's an easy one.

How can I protect myself against hackings?

Never, ever give out your password to someone you don't know--and I don't just mean face-to-face; I mean, know, as in, who they are--or whose honesty and trustworthiness is questionable.

Change your password often, and don't keep it simple. Try to at least make it ten letters, and put in more than one number. Make the number random; try to avoid birthdays, anniversaries, et cetera. Change your password if it has the name of someone close to you, or something obvious about your personality. (Aka, "ilovesoccer1" is a password that screams "Hack me! HACK ME!" wink

Try to avoid people who you know, for a fact, are good hackers. Even if they're friends, you never really know what they'll think of you tomorrow, or even, what they think of you right now. Hacking isn't a nice thing to do, and not a lot of nice people engage in it.

Note!

There is a difference between a hacking and sharing an account. But sharing an account makes you more vulnerable to hacking, because if the person already knows your password, it makes it a heck of lot easier to get into your personal stuff. Duh.

Story time~

I have a friend who got hacked a couple months ago; he was hacked by one of his good friends. They'd talked for months on end. She got on his account, called all of his friends filthy hipocrites for their beliefs, insulted some of her friends, too, and almost got him permanently banned from the site.

So, take heed, ladies and gents. Don't use poor judgement. There are bad people in this world, online and off, that can use personal information that they acquire illegally to harm you somehow. Just be careful, and play smart, because you never know who may be coding to get into your Gaia account or MySpace--or email account, Photobucket account, et cetera--to embarass you, harm you, or spread crap about you.

Love you guys. :3
