Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice

Chapter 5- Promise
It happened all too quickly. Khyre only saw the man flash a glance at him, before the ice window exploded, sending him tottering backwards. Something grasped his throat, as the flurry of snow and ice erupted about, and as they fell to the ground, he was being held aloft by Linder's outstretched arm. "What were you doing spying on us?" he demanded, his voice like a bark. "I...necklace...down...please..." Khyre gasped. "Linder! Let him down!" Serranade had risen from her seat, lifting her dress to walk towards them, "Let him down this instant!" Linder closed his eyes, "May I remind you that he is a spy... " "I gave you an order, Linder Mint." Linder dropped Khyre on the ground, hard, and Khyre rubbed his throat feverishly to rid himself of the strain, coughing horribly. "I'm sorry for him," Serranade kneeled down next to him, "Please, I beg your forgiveness... Linder is my body guard. He was simply performing his job. I hope you're alright." "Alright? Alright? Mr. Attack Dog there nearly suffocated me!" "I'm sorry!" Serranade narrowed her eyes, "There's nothing more I can say but that." "... If you're sorry... then give me that trinket in your hand." Khyre nodded towards the amber stone that she clutched in her palm. She looked down at it and smiled in understanding. "I'm guessing this is yours then," she held it outwards. "It's my friend's... she lost it a while back." " What is a phoenix doing way out here?" She looked at his colours, the gold and scarlets standing out like a light in the dark amongst the ice flows. "I have been using your lands as a safe haven from my people so that I may practice... fighting techniques... and once in a while, my friends would join me. Unfortunately, one is in an ill condition, so out of respect and concern, I ended my training and stayed home. I am usually forbidden from coming out here, let alone all this way, but she was very adament about retrieving her stone... it's quite precious to her..." "So it would seem," Serranade took his hand in hers and placed the stone delicately in his palm, "You are a good friend to trek all this way looking for it." "You must have combed every nook and cranny of the ice flows," Linder said finally, drawing Khyre's attention upward, "That trinket is quite small, and you are a long way from the fire lands..." Khyre nodded. "I'm Serranade," the woman said, regaining Khyre's attention, "Serra to some, and he is Linder Mint. What's your name?" "Khyre." Khyre looked at him with an amused smile at his name, "Mint?" Linder rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Khyre... that's a nice name," Serra smiled and rose to her feet, extending a hand, "Come on in. It's warmer inside, believe it or not. From what I hear, phoenixes can't stand the cold." "I'm used to it... and I really should be going..." Khyre got up and took a step back, glancing in the direction behind him. "It'll be nightfall soon," Linder said, "I wouldn't chance it... you could slip in the ice flows and be chopped in half. It's practically suicide to walk out there alone in the dark. Even if you light a fire, you'll fall through the ice. I advise that you accept Lady Serranade's invitation, for your own health benefits." ".... You're probably right..." Khyre's eyes fell as he noticed the sun begin to dip below the horizon. His heart went with it, as he knew that his disappearance would not go unnoticed. He stepped into the garden through the hole that Linder had made, before he glanced over his shoulder. Linder looked expectingly at Serra, who sighed and muttered under her breath, before hiking up her sleeves and whirring her hands around in a wheeling motion. The ice wall immediately repaired itself, complete with a window (a perfected version Khyre had sculpted) and etchings. She smiled at Khyre's awe, and beckoned him inside the heavy white doors that lay beyond the garden. Linder pushed Khyre along, rather unpolitely, until they were secured inside.
