About then we reached the Gate and I was forced on to my knees (the right of which cracked loudly and with a heavy chunk of pain) before Gerome. That didn’t bother me as much as the shock of pain that was tingling along my nervous system. I missed the bit where he transferred control to someone else. They held my head bowed and I didn’t care.

“You have trespassed and viewed the Forbidden and now you must pay the price!’ he purred.

“This much I guessed, bro. Cut to the chase would you? I know I’m up the creek… just tell me how far.”

This took him and his fellows right back. “You still have one chance for freedom,” he continued unabashed.

I wiggled, managing to get my head loose and raise it. “That’s more than I expected. Still, sounds promising. Speak on Gate Ganger.”

“Hmmmn. Feisty, aren’t you. Very well then, you must defeat our champion.”

“In my current condition?” I said while thinking –Oh, joy? I’m soooo, not up for this.-

“Of course, if you would prefer to forfeit now?…” Ger offered arrogantly.

“Totally dreaming, Gate Ganger. Even if I was completely mulched, I’d still be game for this fight. It doesn’t start to hurt until I begin to stiffen up.” Oh yeah, adrenaline was seriously pumping again.-I don’t know what you’re up to but I don’t intend to pay the piper anytime soon! Still, knowing what the consequences are is a useful thing… “So, spill, what happens if I lose?”

“You become ours…” It was dreadful anticipation in his voice that got me.

“Why does this not surprise me,’ I said mildly.

-Oh great!- I thought –Just lovely. Heh, heh, heh, nooooo problem. All I have to do is beat this champion of theirs. Rightttt. No problem at all. I think I’m in trouble!-

They hustled me into this massive, disproportionately huge, Gothic looking stone cathedral like building that I could suddenly see clearly beside the Gate. I checked apprehensively. Odd that, there was no sign of the ancient wooden mansion that usually stood there. I’d figure it out later… If I had a later. Depressing thought that.
