When I woke again, Ger was laying beside me on top of the covers, just watching my face.

“That’s really creepy, you know,” I told him, “Just laying there watching someone like that.”

He gave me a crooked smile and said; “A lot of women would find it romantic.”

I propped myself up with a wince. “From a guy they were dating possibly, from someone who has recently enslaved them… no, sorry, it’s just creepy.”

He sighed and stroked my cheek with a knuckle. “You are a stubborn, troublesome thing. I want to make your life better, to raise your standard of living a bit. I can’t believe you and your family live like this. I can’t believe anyone lives like this.”

“Not all of us are raised in mansions you know and we have it better than a lot of people. We’ve always got food on the table and the bills are paid. I’ve always wondered how your lot manages to get through school, skipping as much as they do. It’s a wonder any of them can hold down a decent job… or do different rules apply for Gate Gangers?”

“Hey, hey, you’re now part of ‘my lot’ too you know. Speak a little more respectfully.”

“Oh please! It’s not like I asked for this… One thing I would like to know though. What does this Bond Slavery cover? What exactly is it you want from me… you know, my duties and stuff.”

He looked at me for a moment and then said, “And I imagine you are only too familiar with duty.”

“Would you quit fishing around in my head!” I told him, “And don’t go snooping in my families heads either! So, any clue what I tell mum about you? Telling her that I’ve been recently enslaved by a psi powered member of a subversive secret society is likely to earn me a quick trip to the nearest funny farm, considering my behavior lately.”

“It’s good you can joke about it now. That bodes well.”

“Nah, it just hasn’t hit me yet, that’s all.”
