This one isn't terribly complicated, but I'm proud of it/him/her nonetheless. This is the second of my Fai D. Flourite (of CLAMP's Tusbasa Reservoir Chronicle fame) cosplays. The first showed him as he appeared at the beginning of the series. A hyper, zany, possibly insane, basically good-natured wizard who joins in the feather-finding quest out of the goodness of his cheery heart. This avi shows him as he is about vol. 18 (I forget the exact chapter. 170? Thereabouts?), when BEWARE! SPOILERS AHEAD! Highlight to read. we find out that the Syaoran they have come to know and like is really the evil clone of the real Syaoran, who has been held captive by the evil Fei Wang Reed. We discover this when Clone!Syaoran's heart becomes "unsealed," prompting him to reveal his true nature. Fai attempts to stop the evil in him and return him to his former good by re-sealing his heart, but Clone!Syaoran stops him and tears out and consumes one of Fai's eyes, which are the source of his magic. Kurogane, the stoic, bad-tempered ninja who has also been travelling with them, refuses to let Fai die and buys a wish from the space-time witch, Yuuko Ichihara. Yuuko instructs one of the vampires our merry little band has just saved to mingle his blood with Kurogane's and feed it to the comantose Fai, who lives, but wakes up as a vampire. He now relies solely on Kurogane's, and only Kurogane's, blood for sustenance. But because Kurogane robbed him of his chance at dying (Fai is secretly suicidal, for reasons I'll cover in a later avi), and because now they are forced to be so close (once again, Fai has some issues here), the wizard loses his previous happy-go-lucky mask and becomes grim and depressed. This is Fai as the group is about to leave Acid Tokyo, where all this transpired. Still in the trappings of his old self, his demeanor has changed entirely, and the empty socket of his eye is covered by an (admittedly stylish) eyepatch. The Heart of Gold isn't literal, obviously. It represents his metaphorical heart of gold, which he was so close to giving to Kurogane, but now keeps tightly chained and close by, so that he can't lose it again.

When the dead rise, this lady here is perfectly suited for survival (well, as perfectly suited as can be expected). Please keep in mind that these guidelines are designed for civilians, not military or other organized personnel. They will, obviously, have access to more advanced weapons, armor, and vehicles. These factors will allow and ordinary citizen to survive:
- Hair and clothing are tight and held close to the body, giving a zombie less handholds with which to capture and drag the hunter to its mouth. Materials are light and allow the skin to breathe, preventing heat exhaustion. She doesn't drag around unnecessary and bulky armor, which would not only exhaust her more quickly, but will also impede her movement and/ or vision.
- Tough, durable shoes. Relatively quiet in an urban environment, and already broken in for easy long-distance travel.
- Arm- and leg-guards. Most zombie bites occur on the extremeties (hands, feet, arms and legs), so make sure that these areals are well-protected! Kevlar or other resistant material is preferred, if it can be found. But if not, which is far more likely, stick with the "tight hair and clothes" rule.
- Bladed weapon. NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT! Remember: blades don't need reloading. Avoid serrated edges (which could become lodged in a ghoul's skull), or "battle-ready" replica or stage pieces (notoriously unreliable).
- Silenced rifle, with extra ammo. Allows long-distance, virtually silent kills, both of which greatly minimize one's contact with the living dead. Once again, no fancy or unnecessary add-ons or delicate equipment. Stick with the basics, unless you have specialized training (police sniper, Special Forces, etc.).
- Emergency pistols. When worst comes to worst, and a ghoul has you in its rotting grasp, just press the muzzle to the closest patch of skull (the ghoul's, not yours) and pull the trigger. Sadly, also good for suicide if the worst should happen and you recieve a bite.
- Teammates. Travelling alone is just asking for trouble. When in a group (three to ten is the preferred range), supplies can be shared, members can take turns at watch while the others sleep, and some might bring specialized skills such as medical training, advanced survival techniques, or local knowledge of the area.
- Up-to-the-minute information (holographic eyepiece). Nice to have in any battle, but virtually essential for urban or jungle warfare. A mobile "scout" (a dirigible is best when the land is open, otherwise on horseback or a bicycle) should be keeping you up to date on how many zombies are in the area, where they are, any natural hazards, other humans, etc.
- Positive mental attitude, as indicated by the bright, alert eyes and smile. ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!! All the hardware and information in the world won't do you a bit of good if you're strung out, sleep-deprived and panicking. Use your strength agaist their weakness: THINK!

The next step on The Student's journey. She decided that she wanted to take a look at the future (one of them, anyway), and came out in somewhere that looked like Trinity Blood and The Terminator mixed together. Not wanting to leave her fellow humans to their fate, she stayed on to help with their guerilla campaign. With her knowledge of "lost" technologies, such as computers and cars, she became an invaluable asset to the beleagued humans. This was a real toughening-up experience for her, just as it was for Rose Tyler of Doctor Who fame. She's killed people, people have tried to kill her, and she's lost a few close friends, but now the battle is over and it's time for her to move on. Her flimsy school uniform having been destroyed almost as soon as she arrived, she departs in the battered fatigues she'd been wearing while in this world. As a thank-you gift, they also allow her to take the weapons she's used, as she has learned her lesson and doesn't wish to enter the next world unprepared.

Having had quite enough of high-tech battle, the Student takes a step backward in time, becoming a barmaid (the nice word for tavern wench) in a mishmash of medieval England. She is excited to serve ale to thirsty pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, but the greatest literary thrill comes when she finds out that "her" tavern is frequented by none other than Robin Hood and his Merry Men! This is an idyllic period in the Student's travels, in which she relaxes somewhat, learns to use a bow, and realizes that history is what you make of it. But, feeling herself becomming a bit too comfortable in this idealized England, she moves on.

But as she continues her work, she sees more and more reasons why the peasants revolted, and in the end, she finds herself not entirely against them. Still, she is determined to see to it that the innocent escape, while the guilty are brought to justice. Finding that her divided opinions make her unwelcome both at Blakeney Manor and among the revolutionaries, she moves on, letting history take its course.

It's Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Yeah, I know, this one looks really similar to the last one, but that really was my intent, and I really don't do that many like this (I also know I say that a lot). This one is Buffy in the Season 3 episode "The Prom." The sash and umbrella represent the Class Protector award she recieves, her (supposedly hidden) efforts to protect Sunnydale at last recognized and rewarded. The crossbow is just something I've always associated with Buffy, ever since Season 1 (I forget the specific episode), when she picks up a crossbow from Giles' arsenal for the first time, gleefully saying, "Goodbye staking, hello flying death." And of course the forehead jewel, pendant, and fox ears and tail are just local color.

But you can't really see her feet, so I decided that it didn't matter that much anyway. The idea for this one I actually got from the movie Van Helsing, believe it or not. Obviously, it's been de-moronized refined a bit, but I felt that I had to pay tribute to my Gothic vamp-hunter's origins.

I've been messing around with different weapon combos and quantities, trying to find a good balance, and here it is. Nothing redundant, nothing too bulky (I ran into this problem a lot with guns, crossbows, and other projectile weapons, which is why the only guns here are in a holster), nothing too minimalistic, nothing too awkward. And, of course, the clothes need to emphasize the weapons, not overpower or draw the eye away from them. So that was a problem too: something appropriately menacing, yet not the focus of the piece. I think I struck the right note of quiet, functional elegance here.

I was expecting this to come out all chaotic and disorganized, but it rather surprised me in how well it all fits together. This is another one of my Student pieces; I think this one takes place near the end of her journey, if it's not the very last before she returns to her world (bad things generally happen to those who try to stay permantently in a world not their own, however much they may want to). I know she looks happy here, but really, nothing could be further from the truth. She had landed in a world formed of all the fairy-tales and romantic ideals that couldn't find a home anywhere else, found her True Love (of course), and was just about to marry him in the usual flowery fairy-tale way, when Causality stuck in a hand, activated the book, and yanked her back, once and for all. However, if there's one thing she's noticed on her journeys, it's that there isn't just one version of one person, so she still holds out hope of finding her True Love once again, when she gets back to her world of origin.

I've been on a real TRC kick lately, so I've decided to do a sort of page-a-day thing, cosplaying each of the main characters, as they started out, not as they are, in turn. Those looking closely might spot the fact that a few of these will be merely recycled and/or improved versions of avis I've already saved on here, and they would be right, but the keyword here is "improved."
1. Kurogane. I seem to remember his kudan being a big black dragon, the katana is the closest I can get to his fabled Ginnryu, the mask is pure Kurogane, and the rest of it I tried to get as much like his Nihon ninja's outfit as possible.

2. Fai. His kudan was a phoenix, he's got his staff, and his coat was actually created for him (here on Gaia, anway), but I realize that the rest of it is...a more liberal interpretation of his character. I know he never wore a robe like the Fallen Wish or pointy gold shoes, but I think they're more in keeping with his character than the severe black pants and shoes and white shirt he originally had.

3. Syaoran. I can't remember what his kudan was, I don't have time to dig through the manga, and the Internet didn't turn up anything useful, so I just left him (or her, depending on how you look at it) as is. As usual, he never wore this exact outfit, but the basic idea of black tank, brown pants, cloak, and goggles is there. The book, bag, belt, oversize boots and gloves I added because they either: a) were notably worn/used by him at one point or another, b) fit the idea of his character, or c) both.

4. Sakura. This one was harder than the other three, because her signature outfit (well, her Clow outfit, anyway) is too distinctive to have an equivalent on Gaia, except for the cloak, which is an actual reproduction of her real one, and her shoes, which I got lucky with. Otherwise, I just tried for a vaguely Arabian Nights look, without going too slutty. The plumeria could stand either for her fabled good luck (read the item description) or as a really pale cherry (sakura) blossom. The Enchanted Book swirly thing is for the thing that happens whenever she absorbs a new feather. And of course, who but Sakura would have the Heart of Gold?

5. Mokona. Although often forgotten due to his (her?) non-human appearance, I consider Moko-chan here a pivotal member of the group. Aside from just being dead useful, what with being their only means of communication (with each other, as well as with Yuko), giving them the power to travel between worlds, and actually finding the danged feather and leading the rest of the group to it, Mokona provides essential emotional (and occasionally magical) support. Actually, the closer I look at it, the more it seems that Mokona does all the real work. Well, all the real work that doesn't involve giving and recieving extreme bodily injuries, that is. As far as the avi goes, I obviously couldn't turn myself into a large white rabbit-type being, but I did the best I could to make myself white and vaguely conical, with the Mokona hat's purpose being obvious and the Fallen Wish eyes standing for the "mekyo!" thing Mokona does whenever (s)he senses a feather.

This one (well, close enough to this one) has been on my wish list for a while, but I've been playing the Marketplace lately (gotta love those Evolving Items!), and I finally scraped together enough to buy the uber-expenisve Elegant Veil and slightly-less-uber-expensive Radiant Prism, which are the two things this avi really hinges on. I was going for a sort of "Seer" look, but I can't tell whether she's from a straight-up fantasy realm, or a sci-fi realm so far in the future as to appear similar to fantasy. Right now, I'm leaning towards the latter.

This is another one that's been hanging around my wish list for awhile, and I recently aquired the Dreamer's Dust, which, aside from pulling this avi together, will certainly prove quite useful in the future. How's *that* for a confusing sentence? Anyway, this avi has always reminded me of the White Witch of Narnia, only not evil, just a bit alien. I tried to make her remote and elegant without making her too icy (no pun intended), and I hope I succeeded.

I was messing around with my new Dreamer's Dust, and I sort of stumbled across the wings/white dress/boquet combo, and I immediately thought of Thumbelina. I'm talking, of course, about the 1994 Don Bluth animated version, which was one of the staples of my childhood. I still have an extremely soft spot for it, and that I can make a rough immitation of the wedding scene just gives me all sorts of warm fuzzies.
