Chapter 1: Dreams
Her crystal blue eyes danced over the seas, watching the foam develop at the crest of each wave. Her mind lost in the depth of the ocean as she heard the occasional gull cry. The water lapped the sand on the beach to the west side of the magnificent castle as the cool breeze blew over the seemingly raging waters and into the princess’ window, through her long dark curls, giving them some life as she dreamed.
The princess jumped at the sound of her bedroom door being opened. She looked over her shoulder to see two chamber maids, and a woman of supreme elegance at the door. Her hazelnut hair pulled up into a fine bun surrounded by a golden tiara with rubies and emeralds glistening in the sunlight coming through the window. The princess stood and curtsied to her mother.
“Alexis,” the queen spoke quietly, yet firmly. “The soldiers are returning from war. Your father requests our presence at the main doors so we can welcome our men home.” Alexis nodded politely and folded her hands in front of her and followed her mother out of her room and down the hall to the main corridor. The rustling sound of her and her Queen Delphina’s gowns lead Alexis back to her day dream of freedom as she stared at the cobblestone floor passing beneath their feet.
The main castle doors made of the finest maple opened slowly, the warmth from the sun catching Alexis’ attention yet again, the sound of the people outside cheering for the knights mounted on the horses on the bottom of the steps to the castle. Five captains sat upon white stallions, trained to perfection, standing still. All but one. The horse turned, just enough to catch the run and reflect light into Alexis’ face. She blinked and when her eyes came back to focus, she saw the man on the horse and caught her breath. She had never seen a man so handsome, and yet she felt she knew him somehow. The King acknowledged them all, Alexis listening closely for the Knight’s name…”Brennan Aldun” … the knight that seemed to come from her dream…
