The tap of her heels reverberated through the hall as she made her way to her room. Alexis was so flustered by the whole situation with Lord Jacobs she didn't hear the other set of footsteps softly following behind her. Alexis had her eyes fixed on her door until something grabbing her shook her from her almost trance-like stupor. She stopped and turned and her eyes grew wide.
"Are you alright..?" Brennan asked her. He had a tight but gentle grip on her arm. Alexis turned a bit red and nodded.
“I’m fine..” she barely mumbled. Her eyes shifted to the wall behind Brennan then she lowered her head and stared at the cold, grey stone floor. The silence was becoming a bit awkward.
“Matthew is some wha-” before he could finish Alexis looked at him.
“I know you..but..it’s a distant memory.” she said. She stepped back, looking him over quickly and back into his eyes. “Why do I feel i know you?”
Brennan got a small smile on his face. “My father..was captain of the guard. And your mother’s confidant.” He took a step closer to the princess. “ As children…We played together. We also had school lessons together.” He laughed. “Your mother wanted the best for us both. Or that’s what my father told me.”
Alexis’ stare softened a bit. She had a look in her eyes as I the memories were playing in her head. “then…you disappeared…didn’t you…you were just…gone one day…”
Brennan nodded. “Yes..” He reached out and took her hands in his. “My mother had gotten very ill.. And she was way in Hotan. So your father wrote a letter of recommendation to the Duke there. And my father became a royal guard there..”
Alexis took another step toward him and he put his arms around her… “so that’s why…I dream of you…” Brennan looked down at her and she looked back. “You’re the boy…of my dreams…”
