CHAPTER 1
MY JOB COVERS AGGRAVATION
it was a Saturday, Ryo was cleaning the shop up as old man Muto sat behind the counter. every once in a while Ryo would stare at the various cards in the cases, wishing to rebuild his former glory, and to get the man who had taken everything from him. as he swept the floor his grip on the broom handle tightened. he tried to hide his agitation at what had happened.
Ryo looks over to the main counter where the old man was sitting, he knew it, he was being watched. he continued to clean as he worked, but then noticed the old man's eyes were only closed. probably taking a nap. he was not angry at the old man, if anything he was grateful for the help. he did not know if he had lived in the shop or had a home somewhere else. but it was not his concern. the old man was healthy, and business was going well with all the duelists in the city. he was surprised at how many duelists paid little money to get their hands on under valued cards, playing them out in front of the store in ways he never imagined. he kept note of every combination he learned. every move they made, an ultimately he found that in the end, win or lose the children were having fun. something he somehow lost. something he forgot to have in a duel.
The days passed for weeks, he worked, got paid, went home and rested up to come in the next day, he never gave himself a chance to not have anything to do. Old man Muto was his new concern. at least he used that as an excuse to look at the cards in the shop, remembering when he was once a duelist. he knew it was only a matter of time before he would find a new path. one that did not involve risking everything on the next turn.
the end of the day, it was oficially three months after he had lost everything, his nice, silk shirt, and slacks were now replaced with a pair of black jeans, pair of cut off gloves, a sleevles shirt with the eye of ra placed in the middle of the ches twith a jean jacket to cover them. he no longer wore shiny business shoes, but instead wore work boots. his red hair and grown long, and he had tied it back, a few of his bangs falling over his ice blue eyes. for once though e felt happy watching the kids playing in front of the store. the streets were calm. the sound of the duels, and laughter filled the air as he walked over to a bench, he had clocked out early, to take some time to rest as he watched the duelists in the streets.
He continued watching as he win blew through his pony tail. it became new past time. but something felt wrong this day, he could not place it until he heard a young girl screaming, He jumped at the sound and ran own the streets, he was no longer a dueling champion but he shed his duelist pride for the pride of a regular man trying to make a living but still had one problem, children being hurt in any way.
once he got there he the young girl on her side, her deck was thrown every which direction. her duel disk tossed aside, he the noticed a teenager, at least five years older then her, holding a card out at her teasing her. Ryo clenches his fist as he walks over to the girl and helps her up. the boys still insulting and trying to move around to continue cause the girl distress. Ryo gathers the cards ignoring the boys words, then picks up the girl's duel disk, dusting it off before handing it to her.
the young girl smiles to him as he stands and turns around just in time to be hit in the forehead by a rock, he did not flinch, nor did he change his expression as he turned to the girl.
"May i borrow your deck and duel disk? I bet I can get that card back for you." Ryo smiles gently to her as blood lightly trickled from the small cut from the rock. he notices the girl's concern, and whipes the blood away. instead of saying anything she hands him her deck and duel disk and turns to face the boys who were now making faces at him and the girl. "It is not very nice to be challenging those younger then you, No matter what they have in thier deck, if you think they're weak and lose, what if you lose everything against them thinking you will easily beat them?" his tone was dark, as he finally stands at his full height, and points to the boy he knew was the ring leader of the two, pointing at the card he had in his hands, "I bet you her entire deck that I can beat you with it."
the young girl runs up to Ryo grabbing his leg tightly, taking comfort in his presence as the boys laugh at Ryo for the insane challenge.
"Fine, I can use some trash cards for the next bonfire we start. and to be sure I will win I will use this card I took from her." The boy laughs at him, thinking he can win against Ryo, and probably could if the duel did not go right.the boy shuffles the card into the deck and activates it, along with Ryo. THe boy's smirk broadens as he draws, "I will start this game off, I summon Kaki Meru Speeder in attack mode," a Floating mechanical looking monster with 2 thrusters attacked to the ret of the body leading to a small head appeared, what looked like 3 water drops spinning around was the marking it had withing a hexagonal shaped center, it was odd looking to Ryo but he had seen monsters and strategies that had frog monsters, "and set 2 face down cards, then end. I will let you see my Koaki Meru Powerhand for the cost." THe boy's smug expression said he had a plan but the 1200 attack monster seemed like it would be easy to take down with some of the cards in his hand, but he did not want to underestimate the deck.
"I draw," Ryo was Relying on the cards that he needed to be drawn to stop the cards from being too much trouble later on. "I set a defense monster an then set 2 cards face down cards. then I will end for now." He had a plan from what he saw in his hand, if his opponent attacked in the next turn.
THe boy laughs at the first move Ryo made, of course he would it makes sence to try to do everything you could to stop your opponent from getting too many monsters out. " I draw, and now I will activate Speeder's effect to reviel the card i drew, Iron core Koaki Meru wich let's me draw again," the boy was cocky, or knew how to lock the deck he was using, "okay now I summon Valafar by tributing Speeder," the demonic looking monster had flames licking from it's lower torso and hands, then off it's black skin, the same symbole that was on the speeder was on it's cest, the hologram looked down at Ryo with what he thought were eyes, but was not sure if that was programming or just his imagination, the boy laughs at Ryo's expression, "Now i will attack yoru face down monster!!"
The evil looking fiend attacks the card hologram flipping it to be a small round battert with arms and legs. as the monster shattered Ryo smirks, "I activate it's effect to special summon Battery man Double-A" Another humanoid battery appears as Ryo smirks, "then activate the quick play inferno recklas summon wich allows me to special summon two more of him, wich gives all three a whopping three thousand attack points when they are successfuly summoned." Ryo was smiling, he was not enjoying the duel because he was winning, but because it felt good to be in a duel again. the boy on the other hand was dumb founded at the move that had taken place and ends his turn discarding a card from his hand to keep his monster alive on the field.
"now it is my turn, I draw," Ryo was getting hyped up as he heard the little girl laughing as she watched from his side, "Okay I activate from my hand the spell card short circut wich means if I have three batterymen on my field it destroys all of your monsters, and I have three three thousand attack batterymen double-a's."
As the card's animation of lightning destroying everything on the other boy's field, the boy watches in disbelief that he was being defeated by the deck that he just took a key card from, "now i attack with all three to call it game." Ryo smiles as the three batterymen attack with thier own electrical charge, putting the opponent from 8 thousand life points to zero, the game was over.
The boy did not say a word as he walked over to the girl, giving her his deck and the cards he had taken from her, then turns to his friend, not looking over his shoulder. Ryo's felt a knot grow in his chest as he watched the sight, then turne to the girl, taking the duel disk from his arm and handing it to her, "it is up to you to decide what is the right thing to do. okay?" he pat's her on the head gently before walking down the streets, taking every turn back to his appartment. remembering how the man had defeated him with the same joy. he won the cards back for the girl but a young boy lost his deck. was this how the world had become? he shakes his head at the though and smiles, at least the girl got her cards back, and she probably returned the deck to the boys. he had nothing to worry about but to rest for the next day. he wanted to work and be around the cards, both common and rare.
