Chapter 3: Selflessness
I’ve been hearing a lot about selflessness lately with phrases like “It’s not about you.”
Quite true, and I’d like to elaborate on that...

As most people know, God wants us to put others before ourselves. You are to treat them the way you would want to be treated, whether it’s directly at them or done behind their back. In addition to this, you are to also see others as BETTER than yourself, and not just to say it, but to have an honest opinion about it. Humble yourselves before the people of this world, even putting yourself below the heathens and unrepentant sinners.

However, as you humble yourself, do not fall into a sense of worthlessness. For although you have been ordered to think of yourself as less than another, you are both seen equally in the eyes of the Lord. Especially do not doubt yourself because of your sin. Repent and you will be forgiven, no matter how heavy your guilt. In fact, it is said, “God is happier with the sinner that repents than the holy man who has done nothing wrong in his life.” In the Kingdom of Heaven, even the foot is greater than the hand.

1 Corinthians: 12 says that all the churches of God are joined together in the body of Christ. The ear plays its own role, as does the eye. The ear should not wish to be an eye, for “if the entire body was an eye, where would the sense of smell be?” I say all this to help with my next point: Boasting. The people of God all have their part to play in the body of Christ. But if one is given the gift of speaking in tongues, he should not look at the translator and boast in him with envy of his gift. Neither should he boast of his own works, but instead boast in the works of another with the ability to speak in tongues. And once again back to the foot and the hand; men strong in their spiritual gift should not boast in each other, but instead in one weaker than themselves. For the strong are already confident in themselves, but it is the weak and doubtful who need to be uplifted. Again, the hand cannot say to the foot “I don’t need you” and cut off the foot. Those parts we see as useless will be specially treated. Each part holds its own worth.

Finally, to further discuss the phrase quoted in the beginning (“It’s not about you”).
I see life as a race. You don’t take a break halfway through and think to yourself, “When will it ever be enough? When will I be rewarded for my hard work?” No, you push on through the most difficult obstacles and hold your head high, never stumbling, never falling. And when you cross that finish line, you know that your work is done, and that God is waiting with His great reward of eternal life. THAT is what we live for, to serve God’s purpose and not our own wants or our worldly ideals.
