We ventured deeper into the dying forest. I was amazed at the amount of destruction and the lack of enchantment. Everything seemed so… lifeless.
“We’re here.” Kitty said, the bitterness in her tone never leaving. We had apparently reached a mountain face with a cave that lead down into it. Kitty continued leading the way in the dark.
“We’re not going in there, are we?” Emi softly asked me.
confused “It’s where Kitty’s leading us… so I say so?” I replied. “You alright?”
sweatdrop “Ye…yeah…” She said, gripping tighter to my coat and scarf. Was she afraid of the dark? Either way, I couldn’t help but admitting her fear was cute.
“It won’t be dark long.” I said and I was right. The dark passage turned a corner and we were washed in a wave of various lights. Emi and I could not believe our eyes. eek We had entered the Fungus Kingdom. Molds of various colors lit the walls, mushrooms of various colors light the walls. The lights and shadows danced across the rocky patterns on the walls. Paths great and small lead over other paths and houses. The houses were of varying sizes as well. At the far end of the chasm was a very large, very plump button mushroom. It took up the entire back wall. There was something about that shroom that was familiar, but I could not quite pin it.
“What’s with the giant mushroom?” Emi asked.
“That ‘giant mushroom’,” Kitty began, “is the Queen. The ruler and our leader of great power. She is the sole reason why this place survives. She remembers you well, Karakal.”
rolleyes Wonderful. Everyone seems to remember me. Just what I need. Kitty lead us down into the city, more to the lower levels to be exact. Here, the lights were dimmer and fewer. She stopped at one of the square rock houses and, without knocking on the door, simply entered.
scream “Hey, Julius.” She said.
mad “What is it, Shroomkitty?” Came this gruff, cranky voice.
“I brought someone here to see you. He seems to not have a memory of what happened three years ago.” She said with a smug tone. My irritation towards it was short lived when I saw what came out of the shadows.
“A talking mushroom!” Emi squealed in amazement. Oh how I wish I could share her joy.
stressed “Yes I’m a talking mushroom.” He barked, “Why don’t we gather the media and report that ‘there’s still talking mushrooms in the no-longer-enchanted forest’.”
“Karakal… he’s a meanie.” Emi whined in my ear.
“And as for you, sir,” He began, his one red eye glaring up at me with venom anger. Sad how he’s intimidating and he barely reached my knee. “You have a LOT of explaining to do.” mad
