'I’m sorry my dear friend’
As the days and weeks went on they seemed to have each other’s backs quite often. When he was about to be found out by a jealous lover or a father, she stepped in and ‘scared’ off or distracted the male with her unnatural beauty and grace. Yet when she nearly was dragged off to a dark ally, he would always appear as her servant or body guard. Slowly as time went they were a bit more gentle with each other. At first there was a ‘thanks’ a rather curt way of saying it, but one none the less. By the end of the year it was a gentle ‘thank you,’ or ‘oh wow you really saved me on that one, thanks’. It was a slow go, they really didn’t want to be friends, she could easily turn him in for the death penalty and he could easily not come to her rescue and she have the scent of many men on her for all time. Yet, they were starting to be seen together, smiling even.

Just when everything was right things just had to go wrong. The two close friends were sitting out having a nice lunch in the warm sun when a scream rang out. He immediately put himself in between the sound and her. Pulling a small knife like trinket he made it to its original size of a good solid sword. He liked the ornamental swords but he always told her he didn’t use them as there was no point of trying to make death look pretty, that was her job. He simply bought the simple swords to do their job and go back to trinket size. He only could smile when he heard her say that he was smart. She knew how those ‘pretty’ swords were unbalanced and rather dumb looking while fighting. As it was she saw it was his favorite sword, the one he does most damage with. Yet was surprised when he pulled another and made a dagger. “Here, just in case.” Taking it the girl shivered, no telling what monster it would have to be to get through her friend that held a full armory on his body.

It wasn’t just one, their town was being attacked by the kingdom from the west, they were fierce and merciless killers. The male for a moment had doubts but couldn’t let it show as he had someone dear to him to protect. The warriors easily made it through the city’s defenses, it was a peaceful place so it was more just centuries then anything. The girl got up just as the first one came around the corner “by the gods!” As it was a blood covered monster looking of a man. Then another and another, covered in what looked like dragon scales or hides of humans. She didn’t know nor cared, she just wanted away. She watched as the male pulled a second sword and when the men came running he greeted them with such skill that for a while he just seemed to slaughter what was around him. But then they got wise and attacked in waves, but didn’t realize that he had back up. So as he kept their attention the female would jump on one of their backs and touch two others. Her eyes would turn black as her voice quietly echoed out “Death” and they would crumble. He was grateful she would help as, yes he could do an extreme amount of damage but he was getting overwhelmed with the sheer number of them. He was, after all, only one man.

Eventually there was a break and he wanted to fall, he wanted to slump to his bloody knees, drop his weapons and pant, but he knew he couldn’t. He had to push on, there was no choice. He did bend over and regurgitated lunch as he simply pushed too much, too fast, too close after he was eating. Wiping his mouth he grabbed her hand and pulled her hard as he ran away from the town. Sometimes the best strategy for survival is to run away. There is no cowardice when he had to think of another. At one point, he stopped and ripped her skirt off, it was slowing them down, along with the heeled shoes. But then again, he knew she loved being without shoes so he knew she would be okay with them being ditched. “you good” He panted looking at her questionly “Yeah I’m good lets go.” Nodding he took off again.

They both would have a better chance in the woods as they knew the woods and could find the hiding spots. However, they couldn’t stop, they heard heavy footsteps behind them, trampling the ground, breaking branches, getting closer. She wanted to say something, cry out in fear, but she knew that wouldn’t help the situation, but oh god did she want to! She just wanted to go home and hide under the sheets and pretend this wasn’t happening, like how kids did when the shadows or the rain scared them. But the man in front of her, dragging her wouldn’t let her stop. She couldn’t stop as he was hurt, she saw his white shirt starting to look pink in areas from blood and sweat mixing together. She couldn’t let him down, they were just becoming such good good friends. She really considered him close and she didn’t want to disappoint him so she asked her legs not to stop moving, even though they were begging to stop.

She stifled a scream and let go of his hand as she thought she was caught, it was simply a root that she tripped over and met the muddy ground with. Without hesitation he went back and righted her up and held her hair as she bent over and did what he did earlier. She was hurting, her sides felt like someone took a war hammer to them, her lungs felt like they had corsets around them, her legs didn’t feel like they were there, and her throat burned from the acid that just relieved itself from her twisted stomach. When she finished they started up again, he couldn’t ask if she was okay as the foot steps were right on them.

When they came to a clearing they started making their way across till a young man with chestnut hair and a smirk that you didn’t know if you should fear it or embrace it stepped out with a man with black hair and no expression. The chestnut headed man had a bow and an arrow knocked, while the raven top just stood there useless, but scary. “This…is not….good….” he quietly panted to her, not realizing she finally collapsed by him. His hand slowly went for his throwing knives, but jumped as the forest erupted from behind them. Do they go towards the horde of killers that the two knew they would die with. Or, do they go with the two that they have no idea what would happen? Or do they go to the other two openings which only The Fates would know what would happen there…no matter how he looked at it, this situation was just not okay.

He watched as the smirked one drew his bow pointing it straight at him, but then angled it up. ‘not so good now he probably really can hit me.’ he looked over but then down at the panting girl ‘who will protect you if I die?’ shaking his head he pulled a shield and formed it up and placed it over her. It was heavy enough that it made her slump lower from the weight. ‘one of us is going to survive that’s for sure.’ he pulled another shield and got ready for the attack. Then an unusual TWANG! BOOM!…was heard as the arrow flew, it had fire or something to it as it was an unusual sound. When he looked up his shield lowered, his shoulders slumped and his eyes just seemed to give up. It wasn’t one, it was a volley that blotted out the sun. How could he survive that? ‘I’m sorry my dear friend’ and laid over her to protect what the shield didn’t cover.

He stayed there for what felt like hours but was mere moments. “Oi! What are you doing down there? Tryin’ make baby?” a chipper voice cooed over him, which forced him to open his eyes and looked up. It was the chestnut headed one smiling, his hair was somewhat long and braided in different places to keep it out of his eyes. “You going to git off the lass or trying to smother her?” “I..was…trying to…protect her….” not realizing he was explaining himself needlessly. “Well get off her, she’s prolly gitten squash.” Slowly getting up he picked up the shields and put them away after shrinking them. “OI! Nice gift!” but the male was too worried about the girl, helping her up “you okay?” “Yeah…thank you, what happened?”

“Me buddy and me here killed that army.” He nodded “How?” “I shoot arrow, he multiplies it, I direct where I want them to go. I suck at aim and shoot so I cheat. I manipulate flying objects and he…” stopping and turning to see no one there. “Where are you!” he kept turning this way and that looking for the expressionless one till a hand came up and waved then fell back down. “Oh there he is. The more he multiplies somefing the more he exhausts himself.” “Can he die from it?” “No I won’t let ‘em.” Turning “ISN’T THAT RIGHT!” a finger came up then disappeared again “He loves me.” The two just looked on and then at each other. At the same time “Thank you for saving him (her)”

“That’s what we do! Come lets get going before more shows up.” He turned and picked up one arrow, the other one manipulated it alright but it was almost just an illusion. A mirage, a trick of the eye that actually did kill. Getting the female up the two went got the male and disappeared into the woods. They were grateful of the two for saving them and helping them so they were going to stick with them. They’re journey just started and already they were questioning if they would survive but they were going to do their best. But for how long would the four must run till even they get too tired or fed up? They didn’t think of it, but just pushed on east trying to get farther away from what was to come. Silently they all knew they must go north to the great kingdom, but they were concerned with the female, there was so little of her, would she survive the cold?

Once again a nice story really shows how the two grew into friends and a nice way to bring in some excitement once again. Very nice read.
