I apologize, but I simply must post this. It rather irritates me that "goths" always complain about people saying things such as "oh ho ho, you are a cathedral!" and never the more relevant and insulting definition.
Nobody, it seems, has glanced at my dictionary. Yes, it is old, I admit. It was printed in the nineteen eighties (1980s, for those too stupid to get it), but that really doesn't seem far off to me somehow.
Anywhat, it of course didn't have anything about the music yet, because it was somewhat early for that.
It included:
the Teutonic tribe (of which you are aware)
the period in time
the architectural style (which you also mentioned)
AND!
a barbarian
a rude or ignorant person
one defective in taste
If this seems asinine, it probably is, but lord, it's annoying to hear you people prattling on about it. Keep in mind I have no particular dislike for this sort of music, just the people involved with it, some of whom I am friends with.
And, in all probability, the genre was named for the architecture.
Danke und auf wiedersehn.
