I LIKE NARUTO. There. I said it. |

I'm going to b***h about this here just because it seems like the most appropriate place. Afterall, it's Gaia where I have the most trouble, though probably very few people will read this anyway.
There's a generalization revolving around Naruto fans that never ceases to piss me off when people are far too serious on it.
#1. All Naruto fans are illiterate. --> Need I say more? In fact, I bet I'm more literate than half of you people saying I shouldn't be because I like a specific series.
#2. All Naruto fans are following the fad. --> No. No, no, no. Yes- I did start following the series through an American release. The manga, put out in Shounen Jump, February 2003. From the first couple chapters, I was in love with it. A couple months later, I imported dvds (which now I'm replacing since I didn't learn until a year later that they were bootleg... sweatdrop ) and started watching the anime series a couple years before it was out here. My point? Well, obviously there were people who were into the series then, but it was a lower number than there is now. I started liking this series all on my own, so, *gasp* it is possible! And there are plenty of people who are new to the series too who still just like it because they do, and not because they wanted to fit in with Naruto-fan friend #36.
#3. All Naruto fans are stupid. --> This is along the same lines as the "illiterate" line. Completely untrue. Some of the most intelligent people I've met both in real life and online are Naruto fans. As for me... well... If I'm going to be taking a calculus and chem class at the same time again this semester, I sure hope I'm not as stupid as I apparently should be, according to this.
#4. All Naruto fans are just rabid fanthings. --> This is normally attributed to fangirls... but there are fanboys too. However, not all of those fankids are going to spam up the forums while screaming "Sauce-kay is sssssssssssssooooooooooooooooo HAWT !!!1!1!1!!!!21" or about how they are Gaara's girlfriend. (no, that isn't aimed at anyone in particular)
#5. Naruto fans can't even say describe why they like it. --> No one should have to justify liking or disliking something, but many of us are quite capable of it. So go ahead: Ask me why I like it, and not to sound "shallow" (yes, that was aimed at someone. I'm catty enough to admit it). I will.
#6. Naruto fans have seen less than 5 other anime/manga in their life. --> Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Tsubasa, xxxHOLiC, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Bible Black, Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland, Amazing Nurse Nanako, Shaman King, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Yuu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Air, Sailor Moon, Confidential Confessions, Ai Yori Aoshi, Tenchi, Le Portrait de Petite Cossette, .hack//SIGN, .hack//Liminality, Elfen Lied, Planet Ladder, x-Day, Mars, Inu-Yasha, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent, FLCL, Love Hina, .hack//Legend of the Twilight... There, 30 others, both well-known and slightly less well-known, and not at the end of the list yet (damn, did I forget Bebop?). Please don't make me go on. And if they haven't seen many other anime or manga... who cares? They can still like whatever they want to. Just like anyone can dislike whatever they want to.
#7. They're all immature 13-year olds. --> 'Kay. 'Cept I'm 18, so is my friend who I just recently showed this to and loved it. My other friend is 17, and enjoys it. I've met plenty people my age or older who like it, and my mom's 39, and I would never consider her to be "immature", but she watches the anime with me all the time.
So basically... Think before you speak. Think that maybe you're stereotyping and that maybe it's ridiculous. Think that what you're saying could be untrue, if it's a generalization of the fanbase of anything. Think about what you're saying and if it's fair. Or... better yet, if it's true.
Of course, if you don't... well... I'm sure whatever fandom it's aimed against, there will be plenty of intelligent fans to stand up for it. (And by the way, this also goes for anti-fandoms. People have a right to dislike what they want as well. It doesn't mean that they're elitist, or just hate it because it's popular.)
