Gaian Retro Fashion Guide by Lady Crymson
Because Gaia lacks a lot of 1920s-1950s style fashion, I decided to make a sort of style guide on how to emulate different looks from that period. I tried, folks. Not a whole lot I can work with. Let's start with the ladies.
1. The Flapper (inspired by 1920s flapper styles) Items used: Ocean Blue One Piece Swimsuit Blue Feather Headband Blue High School Skirt Blacklight Gloves Jenny's Sentimental Open Toe Shoes
This works best with blue because you can easily find the perfect skirt for it. If you want something shorter, use the Blue Middle School Skirt.
2. The Starlet (inspired by Marilyn Monroe and other screen sirens of the 1940s-50s) Items used: Alice's Crimson Dress Pearl Necklace Pearl Earrings Black Vintage Closed Toe Mid Heel
With the new Egyptian set, this makes things slightly easier for those looking for the perfect black dress (that is NOT torn into shreds). Also, there's a white dress in the Egyptian set that looks somewhat like Marilyn's famous white dress, so you might want to try that. Also, if the Pearl set is too expensive for you, may I suggest the Drop set? It's just as glamorous, but for a small price.
3. The Riveter (inspired by Rosie the Riveter) Items used: Hot Basic Shirt Black Vintage Closed Toe Mid Heel Slate Jeans Ohh~Cean Red Head Wrap
The Ohh~Cean Head Wraps are odd when worn, and don't necessarily conform to the shape of the avatar's head. If you want an alternative to the head wrap, try one of the Complex headbands.
4. The Pinup (inspired by Bettie Page) Items used: Jenny's Mysterious Open Toe Shoes Black Fishnet Stockings Black Strapless Bra Soft Black Underwear
The reason I recommend the Strapless Bra and Soft Black Underwear rather than the Skimpy set is because the Skimpy top looks weird on the avatar.
5. The Sailor Girl Pinup (inspired by Christina Aguilera) Items used: Lawl And Order White Officer's Cap Ohh~Cean Blue Shorts Jenny's Innocent Open Toe Shoes Blue Middle School Uniform Top
Note that Gaia has a glitch with the Lawl and Order hats that makes white "ribbons" whip out of the sides of your head. It's barely visible in the forums until you highlight your avatar. But if your profile doesn't have a white background, the ribbons are clear as day. This glitch doesn't show up on Gavsim or Tektek, as other glitches don't. Just a heads-up there.
btw I'm aware that Christina Aguilera isn't really a retro "icon," like Marilyn and Bettie and Jean Harlow and all those girls were. But at least she pulls it off. -nod-
And now the men...
1. The Gangster (inspired by 1930s-40s gangster styles) Items used: Black Tuxedo Jacket Black Tuxedo Pants Black Tuxedo Shoes Coal Gunner Hat
You might also want to try a dress shirt or button-up shirt of some sort with a pinstripe vest. The Romani sets work also. And SUSPENDERS! They work wonders.
2. The Greaser (inspired by Grease and The Outsiders) Items used: White Castaway Shirt Acid Wash MehTRO Jeans Barq VOX Sneakers Pop Top Class Coat
When selecting a proper haircut for this style, greasy, slicked back styles seem to work best, the Goodboy style especially. But don't make it look too "anime," like with the Aggressor style, or it just doesn't come across as well.
Give me any ideas you have.
xx Crymson
