The Story of Bowe Elias Rankor
By, The Overseer
Grey wings bring a new hope
The strorm raged on around Bowe, battering trees and tearing at bushes. Each drop of rain was large and painful if it hit you, and with the amount hurtling down from the black clouded sky above, it was no wonder that he saw no-one. The rain was so thick, that it was hard to see 10 metres in front of you, which made walking a bit hazerdous.
Bowe was sitting on the thick branch of an old oak tree that was situated on the top of a cliff. He was completly protected from the rain by the thousands upon thousands of leaves that covered the tree, so much so, that some of the branches had made an overhanging which some animals where also sheltering from the worlds raging roar. The mighty oak was a haven for the weak in contrast to the world...and Bowe felt weak.
The recent events had taken him off guard. Learning that, he did not kill his Father, Baranok was not his half-brother, he was not Thanatos, insted his sister, Shiva, was Thanatos, and contrary to Shivas beliefes, he did not know about the fact that she was Thanatos until a weak before when Ragnr told them.
Right now, Bowe did not know how to feel. He was happy that his sister had finaly found out who she was, but disappointed that he was not Thanatos. It didn't seem fair, but he did not want to make his feelings known or Shiva would feel guilty. He would rather feel upset than have his sister feel it. But no matter how hard he tryed, Bowe couldn't help viewing himself as abandoned... He had tryed writing letters to those he knew, but they where rarly answerd, and if they where he had a short time to meet with them and talk. No-one seemed to want him around anymore. His Master, Twilight Vengence, definatly did not seem like he even wanted to be AROUND Bowe, let alone meet up and talk. Shiva was busy with her trainning with thier Father, and when she did have time, she spent it with Bowes Master, that was understandable. And Serenity...it was not so much as she did NOT want to be around Bowe, more that time was always getting in the way. When Bowe went to traine, Serenity would come in search of him, and when Serenity was at leave, Bowe would come looking for her. Atop of all the other things that where pilling up against him, this frustrated Bowe to no end.
With his enemys, Bowe would have no problem speaking his mind, but with those he loved....it was harder. He did not want to cause one of them to feel bad, then he would feel worse and the other would feel worse that HE felt worse, and this would continue. In Bowes mind, it was better for him to feel bad and keep it in, than have another feel bad for his own selfish disappointment, or otherwise.
During this time of thinking, a falcon swooped down and perched itself upon Bowes shoulder. This was Bowes answer to his lonelyness. Rankor. A beautiful looking and smart bird. He had never expected a bird to be so affectionet and intelligent. Bowe loved Rankor, and it seemed that Rankor loved Bowe.
During a walk, Bowe was window shopping through Barton. Nothing realy caught his eye, so he headed west out of the town. From the gate until about a 5 minuite walk down the way, was the market. Ever since Bowe was a child, he had loved the market. Always someone new, if not many, and always something new to look at, taste, smell, wear, anything could be bought in the markets around Gaia. During his idle walk through the market, he heard a man call out "Birds for sale! Birds for sale! I have all you'll need! Small ones, big ones, ones to cook and ones to hold! Birds for sale!" He had never thought of buying a bird, but that was why he was here, for impulse buying. Aproching the stand, the peddler saw him from a distance and instantly started the ritual, fast talking frenzy for a sale.
"Sir! Looking for a bird I see, well you have come to the best place this side of the Bass'ken! Take a look around and take your time, there is no rush to buy a tasty meal for a special occasion or a humble companion for the wife."
Looking around, Bowe saw the wooden cages hanging from the wooden stand, all of them filled with small, chirping, multi-coloured birds. Below, in metal cages, where fat, dark, and very large birds that where obviously for a feast. But none of these was what Bowe was looking for.
"Taking a look at the Canarys I see Sir! Beautiful little things, children love them. How much will you be taking with you?"
"None, the constance of thier high pitched chirps would drive me mad."
"Then how about a raven, good Sir? They are all the rage now, people just can't get enought of them since they've been introduced here to Gaia. They can run your letters, why have a bird, you have never seen, fly your mail when you could save the money and have your own do it?"
"Again, no. I am looking for something a little bigger. Something not as mindless as the small ones, and something more loyal than a raven"
The peddler look at him with squinted eyes and a smile and said to him in a sly voice "I have just what your looking for, Sir." He reached down and pulled up a thick metal cage with a large bird in it. Its eyes where covered with a leather helmet type blindfold. The peddler looked at Bowe with pride as he discribed the bird.
"I got this bird off a friend of mine. He owed me money. He didn't have it at the time, so insted he gave me this. I was going to keep it myself, but a bird like this needs the time and attention that I just can't give. It's from a far placed Island north east of Gaia, forget what it's called. However, this particular bird is called a Falcon. Loyal, strong, fast, vicious if you train it right and smart. I can take it out if you like?"
"So be it"
Taking out a leather gauntlet, the peddler reached in and set the bird on his forearm and took the blindfold off of the birds head. It took a moment for it to take in the suroundings, but once it layed eyes on Bowe, the bird swooped over and set itself on his shoulder and gave a shreek.
"Looks like the bird has taken a shine to you, Sir."
"Indeed it has...What is the price?"
"Well....it IS a rare bird.....and it was a gift from a friend....I'd say...5000 gold?"
"Very well"
Taking out his bag of gold, the money was weighed and the transaction was complete. He had since trained Rankor to fetch particular items by holding the item and saying its name. He would then set the item on the ground and walk away with Rankor on his shoulder. Turning to the item after about 200 metres, he would point to it and say its name clearly and loudly and then bring his outstreched hand back to his chest. Rankor would then fly over, grab the item and drop it to Bowe whilst flying over head, then swoop back to his shoulder. It had taken a few hours for Rankor to learn this, but it was a useful trick.
Thinking of this time when he had gotten Rankor, lifted his spirits in the stormy night. Knowing that, if no-one else, he had Rankor. It made him feel better. Looking out on the storm, a flash of lightning came and went, as did time....

I am who I am and proud to be it.
