“Just great!” Kenchi grimaced, slamming the door with full force it almost cracked into pieces.

“Jeez… what’s your problem,” Tatsuki looked at him with piercing eyes. She didn’t like noisy people for that fact.

“Whatever, brat… who are you by the way, and who took you in into this house?” Kenchi scowled at her, staring her down.

“Tch. Men and their stupid ‘authority’,” Tatsuki mumbled, jumping out into the window.

“Damn gang and damn brat who freeloads at my house,” the young blonde muttered to himself, preparing some tea and biscuits.

“Kenchi-kun! Are you there?” Megumi, a beautiful teenager who happened to be Kenchi’s ‘random fan girl number 00003’, knocked continuously on his door.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming,” irritated, the blonde stood from his place by the polished mahogany table, slamming anything that was on his way as he went to get the door.

“What?” he said, an air of enmity lurking around the room.

“I just wanted to bring you something to eat, Kenchi-kun,” Megumi averted her eyes from his deathly glower, scared that she might be eaten alive.

    “Something to eat!” Kenchi scoffed.

“N-nani…? Did I say something wrong?” Megumi retorted, upset.

“I could feed myself thanks, now if you don’t have anything else to do just please leave?” Kenchi slammed the door shut, stomping furiously back to his tea.

“Tch. Now it’s all cold!” he said, spattering his once hot tea.

“Stupid,” Tatsuki came back in through the window, folding her arms across her chest.

“Humph,” Kenchi glowered, “Who’re you calling stupid, stupid?”

“Whatever,” Tatsuki glowered back, “You shouldn’t have done that to her,”

“Tch. Don’t nag me about how I manage my life and the people I want in it, brat,” Kenchi scowled, his eyes more intense with fury now.

“So you think this world only revolves around you, eh?” Tatsuki looked away; she didn’t want to see his face burning with anger.

“I don’t think so; I know so,” Kenchi spattered, “Tch. Why are you even talking to me, you brat? I don’t know you,”

“Humph. Then why’d you let me live here in the first place? Since you’ve lost that girl you’ve changed so much, Kenchi-niichan—” Tatsuki said, wincing at what she had suddenly called Kenchi.

Whoa, that was the first time that she— Kenchi thought, suddenly turning to face Tatsuki, staring intently at her.

For a while the young blonde and the brunette stared at each other, unable to speak. They felt tremendous agitation, their eyes burning with questions.

“I-I should get to bed now,” Tatsuki averted her eyes in total discomfiture.

“Y-yeah, yo-you should,” Kenchi said, stammering.

Stupid Tatsuki! Tatsuki kept on screaming mentally. What the hell is this you’re feeling? Love? Of course love! Damn it! How could you fall in-love with your landlord? Damn it!

Irritated, she buried her face in a pillow and curled herself into a ball, slowly falling asleep.

Kenchi sighed, looking at his girlfriend’s picture. She was a pretty young brunette with warm, emerald eyes, a charismatic smile, and a captivating face all in all. Unfortunately she died on an airplane crash when she was about to visit Kenchi after she’d been sent to the United States. And it crushed Kenchi, of course.

“Darn,” he said to himself, “Why did that brat have to resemble you,”

They’re a spitting image alright, Kenchi thought. Except for that brat’s attitude, they’re exactly the same…

“Hey,” Tatsuki nagged at him, an inch apart from his face.

Oh shoot, morning already? Kenchi groaned.

“What?!” Kenchi scoffed, leaning closer, now centimeters apart from Tatsuki’s face.

    Again, a moment of awkwardness.

“Move, you idiot,” Tatsuki mumbled, turning redder every now and then.

    “O-oh,” Kenchi stuttered, drawing back.

“Jeez,” Tatsuki mumbled, turning on the TV.

“Oi,” Kenchi called to Tatsuki, “It’s lunch time, Tatsuki-chan,”

Did he just…? Tatsuki thought, confused. She shook her head violently in skepticism.

“Come on in here or I’ll eat up all of these, you brat!” Kenchi said louder.

Tatsuki sat down, closed her eyes and said, “I’m not a brat, I’m actually 16,”

“Well you’re a midget and I’m 24, so there,” Kenchi said, fixing a cup of rice for Tatsuki.

“Eh… uh… hey… please pass the soy sauce,” Tatsuki said, and then stifled a “Kenchi-niichan.”

“Here,” Kenchi, still chowing down his crab cakes, shoved the bottle of soy sauce aside.

Jeez, Tatsuki thought. Where are this guy’s manners?

    “Hey,” Kenchi said, impassive.

“What?” was all Tatsuki could say.

“Here, let me do it for you, brat,” Kenchi retorted, taking hold of a piece of table napkin and wiping the dirt off the brunette’s face.

    “Uh,” Tatsuki flinched, blushing.

“There. Tch. You’re such a messy eater for a girl,” Kenchi spat.

“Uh—wh—whatever!” Tatsuki hid her face behind her rice bowl, pretending to eat more.

“Oi,” Kenchi said in a husky monotone.

“What now?” Tatsuki said, arching her brows.

“Your prom’s coming, right?” Kenchi began, “Got a date already?”

Crap, Tatsuki screamed mentally, He had to ask!

    “No,” Tatsuki said plainly.

“Well, then,” Kenchi hesitated for a moment.

“Just spit it out already!” Tatsuki grew edgy.

“I could be your escort,” Kenchi said, averting his eyes.

Tatsuki was shocked. Automatically, she turned to Kenchi, and her heart beat so fast she thought she would have to run after it.

All she could say was a subdued “Why are you asking me?” she looked down, blushing even more.

“Uh—n-nothing—I uh… just think it would suck if you didn’t have a date since no one would ask you and then you would whine and sulk… so I thought I…” Kenchi slowly turned to Tatsuki, red and burning.

“Actually, a lot of guys have asked me, f.y.i.,” Tatsuki said, “But I guess I’d let you come with me to the prom… you letting me stay here and all,”

Damn! What’s with this guy?! Tatsuki yelled inside of her.

“Alright then…” was all Kenchi could say.

    Prom day’s here!!

“Oi! Tatsuki-chan! What’s taking you so long? We’re gonna be late, you bratty midget!” Kenchi exclaimed at the top of his voice, sitting cross-legged, arms folded across his chest.

It was really strange. Kenchi felt such deafening silence despite all the turbulence going on inside of him. He felt his adrenaline gushing out, unable to interpret why so. Tensed out, he gently touched his temples. That’s it. The girl was taking way too long. Troubled, he rushed to the girl’s room.

“Tatsuki-chan!” he yelled, banging his fists at the door, “What’s going on in there?!”

    Darn! He thought, What’s happening?

Apprehensive, the blonde indiscriminately kept on slamming his sides against the door, only to find a young brunette fainted, suffocating.

“Jeez! I wait for you for two whole hours and this is what I find you in? Tch, you’re such a wimpy kitty!” he told the brunette, carrying her to an old, rusty Volkswagen.

After a whole hour of waiting, the doctor came out of the ER.

“She’s gonna be alright for now. From the tests, we found out that she’s got weak respiration organs. She shouldn’t be overworked,” the doctor said, “She must be so stressed she practically collapsed,”

“Ah. I see,” were the only words the blonde was able to say.

“You can go to her now you know,” the doctor told him, “But I think she’s still asleep,”

Kenchi did as said, and came to Tatsuki, peacefully lying in bed.

He sat by her, stroking her head. “Damn brat,” he whispered, “Making me worry and all,”

“I told you not to call me a brat,” Tatsuki groaned, vaguely opening her eyes.

“You’re awake?” Kenchi was astonished, recoiling.

“Well if I wasn’t awake, how’d I be talking now?” Tatsuki retorted, sneering.

“Just shut up already and get back to sleep,” the young man commanded, giving a look of authority.

“I don’t want to,” Tatsuki folded her arms across her chest.

“Stop being so stubborn, you brat!” Kenchi said, “Didn’t I just say I got worried about you? Sleep and be grateful!”

“Humph,” Tatsuki said, drawing back. She gave a look of defeat, and slowly closed her eyes. “Fine,”

It was half-past midnight when the young brunette awakened.

She groaned, sitting up in a comfortable position for her, seeing a young blonde asleep, face buried in his arms, placed on the side of her bed.

“Thanks,” she whispered, holding the young man’s hand. “Kenchi-niichan,”

“You’re welcome,” the blonde mumbled, and then snored.

“I don’t believe this!” Tatsuki chuckled at him.

Without noticing it, the brunette started humming a tune that was familiar to her. She looked at her landlord in admiration and sighed, “I wish it wasn’t this hard,” she said, “You’re just too much for me I don’t think I could ever have you,”

Tatsuki scoffed. “Just listen to me! I feel like an idiot infatuated by him!”

To calm herself down, Tatsuki started humming that tune again. Kenchi slowly opened his eyes, and whispered, “God, why am I hearing that tune?”

“Hey… awake?” Tatsuki asked him, arching her eyebrows.

    Kenchi groaned, “Yeah,”

“The tune I was humming just now,” Tatsuki began, “She made it for you didn’t she,”

The young blonde looked at her in disbelief. How could she know everything? “How’d you know?” he asked in a flat monotone.

“I helped her with its tune,” Tatsuki looked away, “She was important to me, too, you know,”

    Kenchi was silent, though.

“And knowing her, I’m pretty sure she’d be mad at you if she saw you right now,” the brunette looked at the blonde.

Kenchi glared, “What makes you say such thing?”

“Because you’re being such a ninny weakened by her absence… Tch. Are you sure you’re even a man?” Tatsuki replied, angered.

“What do you want me to do, just forget about her?” the blonde raised his voice.

“I said nothing about forgetting her,” the brunette retorted calmly, “I’m just saying you should move on, stupid,”

That was it. Their conversation ended, and dawn was coming. Both preoccupied, they got lost in their own thoughts, and drifted away.
“Tatsuki-chan, I…” Kenchi said, clearing his voice.

“I don’t wanna hear it,” Tatsuki said, looking away.

“I’m sorry,” he continued anyway, averting his eyes.

    Tatsuki flinched in silence.

“I was… too blind,” he began, “I was supposed to take care of you for her, but I didn’t do anything… I’m sorry.”

“Tch,” Tatsuki scoffed, “Say sorry to her, not me,”

“Still,” the blonde said, “I’m sorry!” he up and enfolded Tatsuki in his arms.

“Stop this,” Tatsuki held back her tears, “I can’t handle it,”

“That so,” Kenchi said, “Push me away, then,”

    “I can’t,” the brunette mumbled, “I don’t want this,”

    “Why not…?” the blonde asked.

“Because,” Tatsuki began, “it’s something selfish I don’t deserve… please, just, stop harassing me, I can’t,”

Kenchi gave a sigh, “Alright,” he said, “if it’s against what you believe in then,”

Tatsuki nodded quietly. She felt unease as she stared at Kenchi, who was staring at her.

“I’m just going out… I need some fresh air,” he said, “Just call the nurse if you need something,”

“Yeah,” Tatsuki mumbled, facing the other side of the bed.

Half a year has passed, and Tatsuki noticed the change in her landlord. No longer grouchy whatsoever, Kenchi started growing back into his old, kind self. And Tatsuki was glad about it.

Kenchi on the other hand had grown close to Megumi over the past few months. They’ve been together a lot, and as they grew closer Kenchi thought that he was falling in love with her. As time passed, he’d decided to confess and everything went well, and now they’re an official couple no doubt.

“Tatsuki-chan!” Megumi came and greeted her friend.

“Oh, what’s up?” the brunette asked, interested.

“Um,” Megumi said, suddenly shy. She flinched, hesitating.

“What is it?” Tatsuki queried, “C’mon, don’t be shy,”

“I’m giving him up for you,” random fan girl 00003’s words kept on echoing in the brunette’s head.

Tatsuki was able to say nothing but a stifled “Why,”

    Megumi looked down.

“I wasn’t playing fair,” she began, “He loved you first,”

“But I turned him down,” Tatsuki replied, expressionless.

Random fan girl 00003 smiled repentantly. “You know it wasn’t what you wanted,”

The brunette was taken aback. Silently, she stared at random fan girl 00003. “No,” she mumbled, “I don’t want to do something as selfish as this, Megumi-chan,”

“I don’t want to stand in your way!” Megumi exclaimed, and then smiled, “Please… you’re the one he needs,”

Tatsuki couldn’t say anything. She forced her voice to come out, but she couldn’t.

    “Thank you,”

And Megumi disappeared into the hallways.

“Kenchi-niichan!!!” Tatsuki exclaimed at the top of her voice, as she tried to catch up to Kenchi, who was leaving for America.

    “Tatsuki?” he turned around, astounded.

“Thank goodness, I caught up with you! I wanted to tell you something…” Tatsuki stood still on the road. She puffed and panted, but was unable to continue. The brunette had fainted from too much strain. And she fainted in the middle of the winding road.

    *Boom! Splat*

Kenchi heard nothing but the sound of a huge truck honking its way towards Tatsuki, who, in the impact, flew in the air and landed down blood-spattered.

    “Tatsuki-chan!”

Everything went on as if fast-forwarded. The sirens have stopped screaming, and the bleeding girl was taken to a stretcher. It was really creepy for Kenchi, who thought that everything happening was like silent movies.

“This is bad, she had fainted from her lungs’ weakness and she got run over by a truck! Her bleeding won’t stop and her respiration’s not getting any better!” The doctor said, pacing his way to the ICU.

“Darn! Is it going to happen to me again?” Kenchi, sitting in the overcast waiting area, clenched his fists, banging them onto his lap.

The clock hasn’t been very polite either, making that tick-tock sound so loud it deafened Kenchi.

An few hours later a doctor came out of the room, walking briskly towards the worried blonde.

“I’m sorry,” the doctor started, “We tried everything we could,”

As if on cue, when Kenchi heard the words ‘I’m sorry’, his eyes widened in sheer terror. He ran to the ICU, and by Tatsuki’s side he stayed.

“What, you’re leaving me too? You women are too unfair!” he said, tears rolling down his cheeks.

Tatsuki slowly opened her eyes like it was cued.

“I’m sorry,” she said, barely audible, “I tried to run towards you, but my body didn’t budge… next thing I knew I was hit by this truck… I’m so sorry, Kenchi-niichan,”

“Please, just don’t talk and get well!” he cried on harder.

“I just thought I was being selfish that’s why I didn’t want to love you any more than I already did, but then every time you weren’t with me I felt my heart bleeding more and more, and it felt like I couldn’t take it… but I tried to be strong, coz I didn’t want to look like some jealous girl who’d beg you to come back after you’ve just settled down with someone else,” the brunette said, stroking the blonde’s face.

“Jeez, you’re saying this as if you’re about to die! Don’t worry, the force is with you, you know! You can make it, trust me!” Kenchi grinned at her.

“I’m sorry,” Tatsuki said, reaching for Kenchi’s head. The blonde leaned in closer and by the time their lips had touched, he slowly felt Tatsuki getting cold.

It was a very fine spring morning. Kenchi had just finished picking out the flowers from his grandmother’s garden, and he walked the grassy plains as if his feet were fluttering.

“It’s a nice day, huh?” he said, sitting down.

He put the bouquet of flowers down too, and smiled, looking at a tombstone with the epitaph of the name of the girl he loved. Hana Tatsuki.

    “I’ll always love you, Tatsuki-chan,”
