With Tim Burton directing and Johnny Depp starring with Alan Rickman, where could this movie have possibly gone wrong? Nowhere. The movie focuses on a barber who has lost everything, and he is trying to get revenge on the judge (Alan Rickman) who sent him to prison on a false charge. The setting remains dreary throughout most of the movie, which completely fits the plot.
Despite the fact that the story revolves around Johnny Depp killing people, there is an underlying layer of humor in the movie. For me, the one of the funniest scenes is when Mrs. Lovett is singing a nice, lovely song about traveling, and Johnny Depp remains stoic... and wears the most hilarious outfits. Don't get me wrong-- the humor is definitely dark. But it's there, and if you can understand it the movie is that much better.
Overall rating: 9/10 (the blood looked fake and some of the characters weren't very strong singers, but they still pull off the "musical" bit.)
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were meant to work together heart
BTW, don't eat before going to see this movie... there is a lot of blood... I even had to look away a couple of times.
