The old guy left for a while and I drooped exhaustedly between them. So much for my chances of doing a runner. Right now it was all I could do to stay awake. I drowsed a little. I was no soldier but I wished I could learn their trick of sleeping whenever, wherever. My body was no longer extending credit and informed me that it was taking what it needed and now!

I jerked awake with the old guy holding something under my nose.

I recoiled automatically and shook my head.

The vile, wafting blue fumes followed.

I shook my head and muttered, “Come on, like I need drugging in this condition. I couldn’t run even if I wanted too.”

The old guy cupped my face and held the vial under my nose again.

“Breathe!” he commanded. Then his manner softened. “It will be alright. It will give you a bit of you’re strength and energy back. It will make what’s coming easier for you.”

“…And… empty my mind? Thanks… anyway.” I sensed surprise in the two holding me. Was he not generally this compassionate?

“This one will also settle you’re stomach,” He added wryly.

“Deal. I… don’t wanna lose it again.” Not that I could have resisted and I was feeling pretty spaced out anyway. I inhaled the stuff and coughed heavily. He moved the vial away.

He raised my chin and looked into my worn and weary face. “That should be enough. Just a little longer and it’ll all be over I promise. I look forward to possibly serving with you.”

“My I live that long,” I murmured.

That blue stuff must have been some kind of mind numbing narcotic because suddenly I couldn’t have raised the will power to twitch a pinky and with will power went my strength. The old guy was right about the other effects too though. My stomach did settle and my physical strength returned to the point where I could stand by myself… apart from that knee.
