I am an idiot, but I knew that.
Time seemed so slow as I just felt like I was floating over the emptiness below me and the other cliff edge was too far for me to even fathom landing. I felt us begin to descend into the trench, the walls around us growing higher. Yes… higher and higher and-
xp “OOF!” I grunted as I suddenly landed on something flat on my stomach knocking the wind out of me. Coughing to regain my breath, I examined what on earth I landed on that caused my acceptance of death to come up short. I froze upon realizing what it was. eek
“Hello? Karakal? Earth to Karakal, come in you ugly elf.” Emi said waving her tiny hand in front of my face. I didn’t respond. I couldn’t find the words to respond. What we fell on was a giant toadstool. Finally, I came to when she pinched my cheek. “I’m talking to you. Let’s get out of here before those robots decide to jump.” She said.
sweatdrop “Y…yeah…” Was all I could muster up to say, but the toadstool started growing upwards until we reached the opposite cliff. I uneasily got off onto the solid ground and the toadstool retreated back into the thick fog. We moved deeper into the dying forest. My mind would not get off the fact that I was saved by a toadstool. That could only mean one thing.
scream “You idiot! What’s the matter with you!?” Emi shouted, “Why would you take a flying leap like that knowing you can’t fly!?”
sweatdrop “I panicked…” Was all I could reply with. My feet began to carry me faster and deeper into the forest.
“Slow down, Karakal. What’s up?” Emi asked between my strides.
“She’s here. That’s the only explanation I can think of for why a toadstool saved us.” I panted, with hopefulness in my heart.
“Who? Do you even know where you’re going, you lunatic?”
“The only other person I remember.” Oh how happy it made me inside to know that she was most likely still alive. We just entered a clearing when a hunting knife whooshed past me and embedded itself into a tree trunk next to my head.
I slowly turned to look at the knife, then the direction it came. A shadow leapt down from the far tree and slowly walked forward.
scream “You got some nerve showing your face around here.” Her voice was cold and full of venom. Her red eyes seemed to glow brighter in the dark.
confused “Friend of yours?” Emi asked.
“Yeah… yes she is…” I nervously replied. At least, I hoped she was.
