Noll bestowed a magnificent storm on Eau Claire tonight. It started fairly innocent... dark clouds rolling in and light thunder. It almost seemed like it would pass us by. After a brief storm, it died down.
So, I went to donate plasma. It started up again. I watched from an office window how much the trees were bent, how much the water pattered against the window. It was very relaxing, and I could just barely hear thunder over the bustle of the Biolife office and the radio.
Then I looked back at the window, and I couldn't see outside. Then the hail came down. It rained down hard in sheets, the wind howled, ice fell from the clouds. I figured-- well, that's my happy little surpise for the night.
It wasn't over: My mom arrived to pick me up and we encountered a police car saying we couldn't go downtown. We took a side street to see the street I live on flooded. Students were romping in the water past their knees, floating down it like a river on tires and inner tubes, in their swimming suits. I couldn't resist; I went immediately outside to stroll along the flooded sidewalk, and cool water lapped at me past my ankles. Whirlpools were spinning over the drains, trying to keep up with the pouring rain. Cars were stalled in the deep water (I guess Matt and Julie spent some time and helped get cars free of the small lake that had formed; I'm quite envious). I couldn't help but smile and laugh to myself.
Now the rain has died down and it looks like things are settling down for the night. This was the storm I'd been hoping for all summer. I just wish Miles could have shared it with me. One day.
